Prophet, Scott Studios, BSI Wavestation, DRS 2006, DirEttore, etc in my 26 year radio career. I think it just depends on what you want to do with your station.
My station, Surfside 1640 uses SAM3. SAM is perfect for a fully automated station that wants to sound live. It, when combined with other secret software goodies, provides functionality that is unlike anything on the market. I have used all of them.
NextGen was a brilliant program when I programmed a 100,000 watt FM for Clear Channel in Raleigh. It provided functions that far outweighed many on the market. My station was able to play sweepers that always tagged intros, etc. Even at 3 am in the morning, we sounded perfect.
The benefits of SAM to my part15, wide area AM network & it's HD Digital Internet Radio Stream is it's intereactivity and web interfacing ability. Terrestrial radio had better step up it's connection with it's listeners. My station can be heard on countless MySpace pages, allows instant requests and provides all of the same service and functionability as the best licensed FM out there- yet, our grasp of technology is superior by leaps and bounds. Our desire to connect with our listeners dwarfs that of a wasted automated class A FM that is stuck in a closet of a cluster of 16 stations.
WARNING: SAM is difficult to learn. I am very literate with computerized radio automation and found myself exchanging coarse words with their tech support. After I reloaded the program and upgraded a few things, all was smooth. Learn it FIRST- then, apply it to your applications.
I wish you all luck in your pursuits. Part 15 can go places for you. My station has had numerous articles written about it, is the member of two business groups & the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce and has local advertisers on board. Do not discount the internet feed with your part 15 station- it is necessary!
