JD Souther, Singer Who Co-Wrote Eagles Classics Like ‘New Kid in Town,’ Dies at 78
JD Souther, the singer, songwriter and actor who co-wrote hits of the Eagles like "New Kid in Town" and "Best of My Love," died Tuesday.
agreed. "You're Only Lonely" is an all time favorite of mine.Souther wrote many great tunes. I always liked "Border Town" from the Souther - Hillman - Furay record. Another great musician has departed from a vibrant era that's becoming the distant past...☮️
My impression was that music was his passion. Writing and recording. The business side of it is not attractive to many artists. Sometimes musicians get exploited and they get wary of those type of functions. Some just quietly prefer privacy. It's not being aloof necessarily...I met him once at a music conference with a lot of industry folks. Everyone went up to him, praising his music and crowding around him. Moments later, I noticed he was gone and didn't stay for the conference. My take was he felt a bit exposed and just disappeared.

Friction and turmoil is common in many bands. The Byrds, Beatles, Stones, Who, Kinks, Police, Fleetwood Mac, and numerous others had plenty of drama. The mercurial elements that help create great music can also blow it apart. Often, the business side is the reason. If one member is writing the majority of the songs, sometimes resentment and jealousy set it. Competition within a group just happens. He says he did a tryout, and felt unnecessary. Plus "I'm a terrible team player." That could be said about several other members.
