Indeed, I have "left the building" at KDWN. When I first came to the station, Claire and I agreed that I was not coming there to be a board op, but as a talk host.

As the station has continued its deterioration into a 50K brokered-time outlet, "The Chef Show" was put into the 2-3PM hour.

I immediately requested that my Saturday schedule be changed to 11AM until 2PM from Noon until 3PM. The answer was no, and so it was decided that we should both make other arrangements.

It is my sincere wish that as soon as KDWN's current sale is completed, that the new owners will better realize, and put into practice the dreams that the late A.J. Williams had for the station, and that the regime in place enjoy their richly deserved, and much needed retirement.

Further, I hope that Tru Hawkins, Mark Edwards, Jim Dallas, and Hart Kirch all find a far better experience with the new owners, and finally have an on-air vehicle as superb as their talent.

As for my plans, I will continue to enjoy my fill-in work at KLIF Dallas, KMBZ Kansas City, WMAL Washington D.C., and others, and wait for a day when some Las Vegas Talk Stations can claim Market #32 as a badge of honor, instead of a stinging embarrassment.

Also, thanks to Tom Chase for the invitation to do news next week on SUNNY 106.5, and KOOL 93.1.

Again, someone else's fault, followed by an unfounded rumor of the station being sold. Come on JD, shame on you. Thought you would have learned by now.

It's not that you can't teach an old dog, new tricks. You can. It's that you can't teach a stupid dog any tricks.

Dreams of A.J. Williams?

What dreams? The regime that is there is there because A.J. Williams left it to them. Williams had plenty of opportunities over the years to either sell out to better ownership, which he turned down, or to forego the revenue from brokered shows and try to build his baby into a 21st-century talk station. He refused to sell, and refused to modernize the station, perhaps because what was on the air suited his (way-out-of-money-demo) tastes. Talk radio stopped being a senior citizen babysitter 20 years ago, except at one station: KDWN.

Of course KDWN introduced Rush Limbaugh to Vegas and Art Bell to the world.
But it was not able to hold onto those marquee names as their fame increased.
Perhaps if the station hadn't been such an audio junkyard of tout shows, vitamin shows and paleolithic dinosaur talent during the '90s, it would have
been able to keep those shows in its stable rather than losing them to KXNT.

I can't believe that Williams' aspirations for KDWN were that much more than what it became: a station that covers the nut but way underperforms its potential in a growing market.

I happen to think KDWN has the sort of faded charm attributed to old drive-in movie theatres, rundown buildings identifiable as gas stations in another life, and other barely functioning anachronisms, but let's not lionize Mr. Williams simply because he has left this mortal phasor coil.

One other thing we can all say about A. J. Williams is this: At least he had a
radio station of his own and most of us never will! I say good for him! He did it his way! All that try to second guess the man are just wasting their breath!

Re: Sunset for KDWN....

If you think KDWN is bad give a listen to A.J.'s Los Angeles outlet, 1460 KTYM.It is all brokered 24/7. It is a cash cow tho. Started out as good country station in 1957.

Re: Dreams of A.J. Williams?

Williams was in fact, a rat b-------. Who rewarded his
first Program Director Charlie Scott for his huge ratings
by letting him go, because Charlie had installed a pop/
adult (precursor to A/C) format, and not Williams favorite
"Big Band". The current GM is an even worse human than
Williams was.

What is it with the vegas market?....when you don't agree you get into name calling. This market will never grow up until you grow up.

Mike, quite simply......JD is a Blowhard and when he comes out and always blames someone else or says it was not his doing then he gets what he deserves.
If you polled the people he has worked with, many would say he was a Great guy......and the same people would tell you he never knew when to shut the H up!

First of all, I didn't blame anyone else for my leaving KDWN. The deal changed, I didn't fit there, I left.

Now, except for a few Total A**holes, most people who slam me around on this board are pretty nice about their criticisms. Truly, I pay attention, and try to learn as much as I can. Please accept my thanks....

Guys...Here's my quandry. Perhaps you can help me with this.

"blow·hard: A boaster or braggart."

I have never ever stood up and said something that wasn't completely true about my accomplishments. So going by the typical understanding of...If you can do it, or have done it, is it bragging? To me, no. Therefore, not a blowhard.

Is it then somehow obnoxious to bring up one's successes? Marty Basch once told a program director of mine that I was a loser. What was that statement based on? Nothing except Marty's ego-based mouth. So, when I pointed out my Las Vegas ratings record, including those at his own radio station, with his own numbers, I was first called a liar, (which was quickly retracted by Infinity H-R), then my successes at the station were simply ignored.

Then, when falsely attacked on this board as being fired by KXNT, (BTW-I resigned due to a hostile work environment), I brought up those ratings again, only to clear my good name, and was attacked again as being what...an uppity DJ who would dare to challenge being publicly slandered?

This is where I get slammed for not knowing when to shut up. OK...What should I do? Stand around, and wait with my hat in my hand for these guys to stop their outright lying, or should I state my case? When I chose the latter, I was excoriated again here for doing so....Why? Is the plantation mentality among the "on-air talent" in this town so entrenched that to even publicly question the de-humanization of on-air people here should demand instant ridicule?

So, I say no, and then stand up for the job-title of Local On-Air Personality. Then I'm called demented", and "...a stupid dog." (OK....Fine. The pioneers take the arrows.) Now, would you please explain how laying down and piling on AGAINST ANY KIND OF ON AIR SUCCESS helps improve working conditions in Las Vegas for the few On-Air broadcasters that are left? The newest radio format in broadcasting has NO live on-air component. The number one Talk station in town has 4 hours, or less, of local programming per day. THERE IS NO LIVE & LOCAL AFTERNOON TALK SHOW HERE IN MARKET #32. Why? How many stations are even manned 24/7-365? By attacking me, or anyone else with some successes here, are you improving local broadcasting, or helping its demise?

I say you're providing the rope these people continue to hang you with. (I am open to a cogent argument.)

OK....You may say that I say has some truth to it, but I'm such an a**hole, no one will ever admit it. Fine again....You win. I'll shut up. Now, will that improve things here for me, for you, for anyone On-Air? Nope. So I'll ask this again...

When I shut up and played ball, I got screwed by management. When I stood up and fought, I got screwed by management, (and thanks to Radio-Info, by my On-Air colleagues as well.) So what am I losing? A weekend gig at Colon-Cleansing/Prostate Health Central? OK...I'll finish up my business here, and leave this sorry mess to you. Go ahead. Make your day.

But mark these words: If Las Vegas radio ever matters again, it will be because Live & Local On-Air Broadcasters matter again...Right? (I can hardly wait to see what's your argument is to that....)

I'm sorry man I just don't agree with the logic that it is your place to judge.
Without your real name and credentials posted it seems rather bush league. Las Vegas has a lot of potential but it can't grow up until the people involved do.

Re: Just Desserts

I'm not about beating a dead horse, but is anyone really surprised the John David is out of a gig again? Truthteller has hit it on the head. JD is a wonderful guy. His passion for the medium is to be respected. The issue has always been that he won't shutup. He's no longer FB. He's UB Unemployed Broadcaster. It's very difficult to be a radio broadcaster without a radio station to broadcast from. (No, internet radio DOESN'T count.) I fear JD is living on an island and unfortunately he has sunk all his boats and burned all his bridges. Best of luck JD

Thanks Vet...truly. However...

2 weeks before my departure at KDWN, I was on the air filling in for Michael Graham at WMAL, Washington DC. In September, I'll be doing another two full weeks in the nation's capitol on that station, working as myself.

Also, during those same two weeks, Tom Chase was kind enough to invite me to fill in on morning drive news on SUNNY 106, and KOOL 93.1; an assignment I finished today. Later this afternoon, thanks to Rik McNeil, I'll be sitting in on KOOL preparing to fill in for an Honest-to-God American hero, Dan Arthur. He's leaving after next week to go to Basic Training with the US ARMY Reserve. It's nothing short of an honor to even have a chance keep his seat warm.

Further, next week, I'm booked at WDEL Wilmington, Delaware for a week of shows, taking over for the departing Rush Limbaugh.

U.B.? Not hardly.

Look, no matter what anyone says, I'm a hard-working, honest guy, who has made tons of money for everyone I've ever worked with in this town.....period. I've gotten them ratings and awards, I've never said "no", I've jumped through evey hoop, never got them fined, never did drugs, never got a DUI, or did anything to embarrass them, or the station. Nothing....ever.

And yet somehow, because I publicly stand up for the respected title of On-Air Broadcaster, put my real name on my words, name names, and yes, BASED ON HARD-EARNED MERIT ask only to be treated with a FRACTION of the respect they demand of me....somehow, that makes me the bad guy?

Nope. Sorry...thuggery is thuggery. Being silent about it only guarantees its continuance.

And if being done with that means I'm done with Las Vegas radio. So be it.

How Childish! Hide behind a screen name and flame. Your opinion has no point without your real name. There is plenty to bad mouth about Las Vegas radio you sir are obsessed with J.D.
