J.P. Patches Update

I know this has nothing to do with Seattle Radio, but it has alot to do about Seattle ...

... quoting Chris Wedes:

"..I have been diagnosed with a blood cancer called Myeloma - which can be controlled with chemotherapy
but not cured. It has affected my kidneys, requiring me to have dialysis treatments three times a week
for four hours a day - and on top of this, I have had some prostate surgery..."

Send him your prayers and best wishes to:
[email protected]

Thanks for posting JP's e-mail. I sent "JP" an e-mail and hopefully it will encourage him to beat that cancer!!

I grew up watching up in the morning and again in the afternoon on KIRO-TV-7 when I was a little kid.....his show was the best---bar none. I mean Brakeman Bill was good, Stan Boreson was good, Captain Puget was another winner, Penny & Her Pals on the old KTVW-13, left a bit to be desired...but it was so cool for kids to have live and local shows like that on TV. Don't see anything like that now......

My dad--the late Jack Hemingway worked at KIRO-TV-7, and got to be the "Weatherman" and had the honor of throwing cups on water on J.P. I had a chance to meet "JP" in person at the MOHAI TV reunion along with Brakeman Bill and Stan Boreson and of course "Gertrude," and what great guys----nice to do pics, sign stuff and more....I consider it an honor to have shook their hands.

Also---been gone from KJR-FM about a year now....Jay Kelly decided to bring in his own people.....I really do miss doing that show.....weekends, fill-in, afternoons and evenings for around 5 years---it was a good run. Miss working with Bob Case when he was there---that "Superhits of the 60's & 70's" was such a fun listenable format...now KJR-FM is kinda boring and very predictable but then again so is alot of radio these days......I've been with KISC-FM here in Spokane for 9 1/2 years and my production company "CBS-Spokane" is doing well. In fact in the Seattle area-----hear our stuff on KRKO, KMAS and KLKI. Also on KXA-FM in Cle Elum, KEYG Grand Coulee, KZXR Prosser, and dozens and dozens of others......life is good!!!

Am interested in people's creative input here...

We have a small "committee" looking at how to make sure Wedes knows how much the community appreciates all that he has done for us. A sidebar to that would be a cool accomplishment if we could also finish the fund-raising on the statue effort for him. Several talent have stepped up to the challenge in town saying "let's DO something"; and they are more than willing to transcend station boundaries to show support for this broadcast icon who is really bigger than all of us put together!!

Anyone have creative thoughts about what could be done so Patches Pals can, above all, say a "loud and clear THANK YOU" while there is still time for it to be heard? When you look around the leadership of our greater Puget Sound community ... many many "Patches Pals" have moved on to accomplish some pretty cool things. Ask any one of them if they'd like to say "thanks" to Wedes ... and it's a no-brainer.

..by holding a HUGE Qwest Field event in his honor for free - center stage field/whole enchilada...
...and put ALL of J.P.'s memories/greatest moments video on the big screen!

There should be a picture displayed of J.P. on the front pages - AND ON the very same day
- of BOTH the P-I and Times beforehand; That'll turn thousands of heads at the newsstands...

..although (afraid to say), those papers WILL do this someday - but only after it's tooooo late...

We have several videotapes of JP Patches shows and we are looking to upgrade to DVD. Both my daughters love them more than anything they put out today and so do most of their friends. Taking JP Patches off in the '80s was one thing people around here NEVER forgave KIRO-TV for. There are lost generations here that have never had the joy of turning on JP Patches and enjoying the kind of kids TV they simply have lost the art in making anymore. My girls get bored with today's stuff, but NEVER tire of JP Patches. I'd LOVE to see a DVD box set with as many episodes as possible someday.....

Absolutely -

- understand that J.P. once had on his show (seperately): stars Steve Allen and Tiny Tim

Yes, I believe that Steve Allen and Tiny Tim used to show up for KIRO's annual telethon (along with Shari Lewis, Lampchop, etc.). I bet J.P. caught them in between their telethon appearances.

My PD and I had this idea bout 10 years ago and then we both left Seattle...
Re-name the street KIRO TV is on -- if I remember correctly it's 3rd & Broad -- to J. P. Patches Way...The JP statue is a cool idea too...

Bummer is if that were to happen, I bet KIRO-TV would MOVE!!! They seem more bent on "distancing" themselves from the clown than embracing ("that was a different era") kind of thing. Too bad those kids shows never earned any REVENUE for the station (NOT) or weren't profitable because of the extremely high price of talent (NOT)..... !!!

Am I understanding correctly that all the funds necessary for the J.P. and Gertrude statue have not yet been raised? If not, it is shameful. How about approaching all the local bands and artists to do a huge fundraising concert? The line up could include Seattle bands and acts spanning the decades. Most who were either making hit records when JP was on the air or who grew up in Seattle watching JP and Getrude. The Ventures, Sonics, Wailers, Merrilee Rush, Heart, Alice In Chains to name a few. Hell, I'd bet the guys from Pearl Jam were Patches Pals too and they'd be up for it. It's worth a shot. Anyone know a promoter who could put it together? Maybe they could get the EMP to donate the use of the room there for the concert.

JP Patches and Gertrude actually hosted a couple episodes of the '90s local alternative rock video TV show Northwest Rock in their most watched episodes ever (which aired at 1:00 AM Sunday mornings on that once lovable underdog, Ch. 22 - then known as KTZZ-TV)

ANY local band of the last 50 years (and especially the local alternative, hip-hop and punk bands of the last few decades) would get together if asked, even re-unite for a massive benefit concert for JP Patches (Chris Wedes.) He was THAT influential on Puget Sound pop culture. And the turnout will probably even rival Woodstock. So forget EMP. You'll need The Gorge for this one....

Anyone with promoter connections? You'll have almost 50 years of AWESOME Northwest bands, and generations of Patches Pals from old schoolers to little kids like my daughters coming out to pay tribute to the COOLEST clown EVER. And the outside naysayers will personally see just how big of an icon he STILL is in the Northwest....

The revenue it generates will MORE than see Chris Wedes gets the finest and most skilled care he deserves...

And trust me, the vast majority of these bands would do it in a heartbeat. And without question. If it's to save JP Patches, a BIG line up is possible. Imagine this (in no particular order):

The Sonics
Alice In Chains
Pearl Jam
Merrilee Rush
The Allies
Soundgarden
Rail
The Posies
Sleater-Kinney
Sir Mix-A-Lot
UC5
Heart
Michael Tomlinson
The Fartz
Beat Happening
Maurice & The Cliches
The Ventures
The Fastbacks
Jim Baisnight & The Moberlys
Kid Sensation
The Accused
Brenda White
Mondo Vita
Seven Year Bitch
Mudhoney
The Eagertones
Skinyard
Some Velvet Sidewalk
Pond
The Viceroys
Tad
The U-Men
The Sympathy Cards
Team Dresch
Red Dress
The Melvins
Mono Men
Love Battery
The Mentors
X-15
Screaming Trees
Dave Lewis
Apple Maggot Quarantine Area
The Refuzors
The Frantics
Malfunkshun
Blackwood Laird
Dumt
Harvey Danger
Visible Targets
Bonnie Guitar
The Pudz
My Sister's Machine
The Fleetwoods
The Spinanes
10 Minute Warning
54-40
The Telepaths
The Attachments

There a lot I missed, sorry, these are all that immediatally come to mind.

That is actually one of the ideas being "floated" right now ... EMP, local artists who were patches pals, etc. One issues is almost everyone working on this is doing so part-time (volunteering) and also trying to get several different parties to come together on the same page despite management objectives that broadcaster "a" may be doing same promotion as broadcaster "b". To their credit, talent who knows better seems to be all over the "how do we help??" thing. Frustrating that we have an opportunity to help someone (+ Children's Hosp) AND strike a huge community emotional chord and one reaction to it is all the broadcaster mgmt b*s* about "recall" and "branding" and what not. This would be a great time to check out Bill Wippel's editorial about what local radio USED to do very very well. Community size doesn't matter .. sometimes there are issues (e.g. 9/11, etc.) where it's absolutely cool when broadcasters come togethere and unite the community. In my opinion that's a lot better than saying "no" to the opportunity and going back to program more talk programming specifically designed to SEPARATE the communtiy!

KING-TV did a mention of the waterfont appearance today (Sunday) ... mentioned the statue but did NOT mention the web site or a KING-5 Newsklinks to the web site!!!!! Aaaaarrrrrrgggghhhhhhh!!! At least some people MAY be more aware now of the urgency of finishing the fundraising ....

KIXI radio was behind this (JP Statue) for awhile. I remember Jim & Jim talking about it. Maybe they could put together a fundraiser auction or something. Anyone with connections at Sandusky?
