J.P. Peterson to 1470

A promo I just heard said that NewsChannel 8's J.P. Peterson is getting his own show on 1470 from 12-2pm starting July 24th. Does this guy have any radio experience at all?

He did indeed, and did a wonderful job in doing so. This is quite the coup that Brad James is pulling over at 1470, although I still won't listen to Brantley. By the way, the Times also reported this morning that 1470 has signed a two-year extention with ESPN Radio. Now let's hope that they actually start airing NBA Playoff games next season, and not just the clinching game of the Finals...oh, yeah, and get that signal situation squared away. We could use some competition in the sports-radio genre in this market, for I don't like what the Animal has been doing as of late.

WOW NBA Games on the Radio! Maybe we could get the WNBA too! And don't forget Air America.

I know Brad James has more sense that to put a rating killer like the NBA on his station. But do you really think any station can overtake the Big Dog and 620's signal?

Didn't know that NBA basketball on the radio was a ratings killer, but to have literally zero NBA talk (unless T. Wright fills in for the Big Dog) in this area while one team in our state is a good, young, up-and-coming team and the other is only the newly-crowned NBA Champion? That's rather pathetic if you ask me as a sports fan.

As far as overtaking the Big Dog, 1470 has a lonnnnnnng way to go, and probably won't get there. I've stated this before on other threads and I'll say it again: I truly don't believe Scot Brantley is the answer that 1470's looking for. JP might help; however, he's going up against Rome. Be that as it may, before the CC/Jacor merger in '99, I seem to recall Chris Thomas going up against Rome from 1-3 between the Babe and the Big Dog, so going up against Rome may not be as formidable as it may seem on paper. Besides, I've heard a lot of folks that call into Steve's show (when I get the chance to listen) that have stated that they don't tune in from noon to 3PM. I think it's going to take a station with the testicular fortitude (as Mick Foley would put it) and the wherewithal to stand up to the Animal juggernaut. One that doesn't kiss up to other fans when it comes to baseball (especially the Skanks a la Sileo), one that isn't afraid to talk roundball or NASCAR, and one that really "gets it" when it comes to our local teams. Not to mention a strong enough signal to boot.

Hey, let's take our two best shows, In the Herd with Colin Cowherd and The Dan Patrick Show, and cut them in favor of another doomed to fail local show.

"Hot Lunch?" That's the best they could come up with? If it lasts six months, it'll be a miracle.

Chris Thomas was not a saint. He was a bitter alcoholic who was fired from Channel 8 for being drunk on-air and if he hadn't gotten cancer when he did, WDAE was going to fire him for getting into a DUI accident with Bucs cheerleader Michelle Betancourt.

Actually at one point, Thomas was up against Tom Korun on the old 820 and Rome on 1380 (I think that was the signal). When Clear Channel bought the Paxson stations, 1380 ceased being sports and 820 took Rome. At that time Rome was very hot and by far the highest rated sports show in the market. WDAE grabbed Rome after the Jacor-Clear Channel merger and moved 'The Mediocre Sports Hunk' to the slot before Rome.

Actually Rome was on 1040, which Clear Channel owned as WMTX-AM (Mix and Mason were on 95.7). Jacor owned the Animal on 1250, and Paxson owned 820.

I think there's far less consideration of trying to overtake 620 and simply the realization that they can sell the local sports shows and make a little money with 1470.

As far as the signal is concerned, I commute from Palm Harbor to Brandon every morning, and listen to Mike & Mike on 1470. the signal is fine until the I-4/275 merge, then 1470 from Ft. Lauderdale steps on it.
