I knew JR in high school and college. His real name is Jim Merick. We got into radio about the same time, he at WFOB in Fostoria, Ohio and I at WLEC at Sandusky, Ohio in 1965. He had the pipes and looked old enough to buy the beer for us guys in high school. We both worked together off and on in Ohio at WFOB, WTTF,WTTO, WAWR, WLEC and others. When he left NY and Z100 he ended up doing oldies in Cleveland at Majic 105. Then worked with Clear Channel Columbus and last at CBS Detroit. Last I talked with him he was off the air due to sickness, the medication of which effected his vocal cords. He is still selling his music library which I have to say is one of the most well produced I have used.
Jim is one of those guys who was born talented. I don't think I ever saw him pick up an instrament that he couldn't play. Guitar, piano, etc he could do it. And he is a wonderfull free hand artist too. I remember while in college I needed a graphic for a TV production project I was doing. He grabbed a piece of White Cardboard and a Black magic marker and doodled a great graphic that got me high grades.
