J.R. Nelson

Today's Taylor on Radio-Info mentions the passing of J.R. Nelson, who he says most recently worked for CBS in Detroit but also "left his mark on Cleveland, Columbus and in New York" at Z100, before moving on to voiceover/production work.

The name sounds so very familiar, but I can't place it. WHOK, perhaps?

J.R. was known as "Uncle J.R" on Wild Country 98-9 in the mid-90's and remained as production director for WHOK when Wild flipped to Channel Z.

This was where I met JR, who took me under his wing. I did not get paid squat for this gig, but had the time of my life working with him. There's an audio player on my myspace page and the last track on it is a compilation from his afternoon show on Wild Country (www.myspace.com/jobyphillips). He gave it to me when we reconnected in Michigan about 5 years ago.

I just returned from his memorial service in Oak Harbor, OH. It was wonderful to hear so many great stories from his youth and radio days and I was honored to share a story or two myself.

Thanks for you mentorship and friendship, Uncle J.R. I will miss you.
