J-Ville To "Kiss" 97.9 Goodbye?

Word on the street is that they're planning to rebrand as "Radio Now 97.9" as of Tuesday morning, with their sights set on the big 951,000-pound ape in the room (WAPE). Incidentally, today in nearby Tampa Bay, Cox blew up their longtime 80's station to do battle with Clear Channel's 93.3 WFLZ. I guess this is CC's response...

Hey, I wonder there this goes...

Um, their sights HAVE been set on WAPE since they launched. How does re-branding as "RADIO NOW 97.9" help if it's the same format. I had heard it was going to be more of a GEN-X format.

....which would be smart. Take some listeners from APE, take some from XXJ. Makes sense to me.

Sounds like they are running out of options here in Jacksonville..we already have 4 stations that play the same music. come on what else can they do here.. Clear channel is letting Cox whip their butts here!

Wow. I'm surprised that KISS lasted as long as it did (11+ years) without ever really overtaking WAPE. One would think that KISS would have at least been the CHR leader for at least 3 or 4 books during that time. On a personal note, I was the last live jock on WFSJ (Smooth Jazz 97.9) before the stunting (the old Budweiser "WASSAAAAAAAAP?????" on a loop) in March 2000. Geez, I am OLD.

not sure on that whole gen-x thing. unless they do something different than the point did. there is a station in albany ga called gen-x radio that is owned by clear channel. i think that format could work in jacks. the call letters are wgex. it's surprising kiss did last that long if they are indeed flipping.... it was kinda funny to hear the monsters on 97.9 back in 2000 during the flip. when i was in jacks i was a fan of kiss back then. no idea why. i'll be watching heer from brandon :).

I don't get "Gen X" radio @ all. The '90s were the worst decade for music & most of it is still played in segments on different stations. T

This is from someone in the supposed age demo (born in the '70s) who would fall for this. Hopefully '90s oldies die a quick, horrible, painful death. Maybe send 97.9 back to St. Aug. to be WFOY-FM!

P.S.: I'm a former employee of Kiss.

I have to both agree and disagree here. The 90's music played on most stations is garbage, but the 90's on a Gen-X station is the real good stuff, that the others seem to keep overlooking. The same old stale songs on most "hit" stations is just that... OLD -and tired.

I'd say today's music is the worst ever! Full of no talent hacks, fake bands/artists, auto-tuned everything & tv shows deciding who the next big thing will be. Horrible!

I live in the the Ville now...not JAX; but Louisville, home of CC's original Gen-x radio. While they finally added some local jocks; the station's playlist has too many repeats and is not ripe for continous listening day after day. CC flipped our Kiss CHR last year to Radio Now. The biggest change was a change in the morning show and NO rock-leaning hits anymore. Leans more Rhythmix. The station sounds livelier; but still play second fiddle to the other CHR in the market, though not by much.

This would be a huge letdown if that's the plan in Jacksonville, as CC already has The Beat...but it won't be the first time that two stations in the same Jax cluster played the same music.

What a nice tease we have here. Could just be a reboot and rebrand, like when WCRJ became Rooster Country after a loooooong countdown. What big, viable formats are left here? I'm thinking whatever happens will be minor, as Kiss is telling its Facebook followers (who are speculating that Planet will come back, or are already mourning) to hold their horses, because this will be something they will like.

So my bet is nothing more than a minor musical tweak (pleeeease not urban!), and maybe a new name.

I believe the new format will consist of 24/7 of The Greaseman known as 97.9 Grease FM, Jacksonville's Greasy spot of the dial. ;)

If I was a betting man...or had the stick, I would have toasted Kiss long ago for Hot AC or Modern AC. WAPE always was agressive on modern ac tracks when I was at Planet...and if done right, a mod ac would hurt APE and X. Just saying....

Man oh man, that would be schweet! Don't touch that dial or I'll shpeckle it! Pfft-pfft-pfft-eh!

As for modern AC, I'd love to hear it. Even though WEJZ has become more hip in recent years, it's still has its stigma/unique brand about it (depending on which demo you're in!). The relatively short-lived Mix 105 was one of my all time favorites.

Modern adult contemporary does appear to be one of the radio voids currently existing in Jacksonville. Although WEJZ does a very good job in filling the mainstream adult contemporary void, there are no stations catering to the demographic which falls between the older skewing adult contemporary and the younger skewing CHR groups. Any station which programs modern or hot adult contemporary will compete directly against heritage WEJZ and heritage WAPE, both 100kw signals, so the question is which signal is the best fit for a format of this type?!?

Somebody needs get control of that audio processing. It is so processed it sounds like they are programming to modulation monitors and not ears...

Very distorted...
