Question ? Why would a Christian Radio Station who plays Christian music all day long decide to play high school football on Aug 27th which was a Thursday night around 7pm?? Are they serious? It was the worst quality sounding audio.

it's not that unusual for an alumni group to buy time for high school broadcasts:
regular listenership is down at 7p anyway...grab the cash.

of course I'm just guessing

Yeah and sometimes it can be a huge cash grab, above whatever regular programming you were going to otherwise air. Surprised they don't do more of this in Atlanta. Guess it's mainly a small-town thing.

it is a small town thing & in some cases (like in my hometown of dalton), the radio station pays several thousand dollars a year for the rights to broadcast high school football because of the huge revenues it brings in... & i'm sure when the check is made out to the school system, it can be "tax deductible"....

I started out in this business at a powerful 1000 watt daytime religious station. We carried taped delay high school football on Saturday mornings. Why we made money on it and it was not offensive. Plus were were able to get money from people who would not talk to us the rest of the year.

There's $$$ in hyper-local programming like that. Shops that wouldn't advertise with you if you had a gun to their head and could show you have 300,000 listeners will open their wallets right up for high school football. Don't tell people what they should want...figure out what they do want and just go with it.

These guys used to be on 92.5 the bear with Scott and Charlie's High School football wrap up show and now they moved here and they do know football, just need to get the air thing down and Scott and Charlie have moved to FUN 101.1 fm in Thomaston, GA to do their show too. Seems no one is staying with 92.5, makes you kind of wonder what is going on there. Everyone who started there is gone now except a can show in morning drive. Back to the "J", it may turn out to be good for them with the guys they have doing it but needs to pick up on quality.

Is there not even a high school football scoreboard show in Atlanta? That by itself would be some good bank.

As a matter of fact, there is at least ONE award-winning sports scoreboard show in Atlanta, on AM 920. Heard they won a pair of Gabby-related awards for it, too. Another one may exist on one of the city's sports stations. Wondering myself why more attention is not paid to these shows by the stations' marketing and advertising groups. :)

Maybe it has something to do with the large number of people in the Atlanta area that are from other places around the country and thus, have no real ties to high school football here. Also, even though people in the South love their high school football, Atlanta also has pro and major college sports like Georgia Tech and Georgia down the road (unlike most other areas in the South), so I'd guess that those sports take up so much space in the local media.

While a particular target audience may focus on the football fan in general, most of the media groups should (if they do not already) focus on selling high school football programming toward the advertisers seeking to capture a high school football audience. This is, the affluent parents of said football players. Find their niche, and you'll find the needed revenue and listeners that follow. There is a bunch of families from across the country that have kids in the programs across the region, that will want to tune in...

I don't know anything about the factors behind the decision for J to broadcast hs football, but in light of today's abysmal economy in general, and for broadcasters in particular, I suspect stations are looking at any reasonable way to generate revenue. And despite supposedly being "Atlanta's" J93, the truth is that J is really more of a localized southside station with strong listenership clustered in about a half-dozen southside counties. It makes sense to carry this type of programming. It appeals to the strong family-oriented type of listener that J would appeal to, it doesn't contradict their Christian/family programming, and is a ready-made product that simply needed to be put on the air.

All that being said, I personally still don't get the appeal of h.s. football, but that's just me.
