JA Ventures Stations: KGEN and KTIP

The "sister station" KTIP 1450 AM in Porterville currently runs a 5-watt cross-service translator K267CG on 101.3 . The station had a CP to broadcast with 250 watts ERP using the AM stick for the tower but the CP expired back in January, 2021. For now, the FM antenna is mounted on the building.

Hmmm... KTIP has a single bay on their main stick and I can hear 101.3 almost to Visalia. Perhaps they are on the full wattage and just not yet bothered to re-file the expired paperwork.

I've heard KGEN 1370 in both Wyoming and Alaska at night and VERIFIED it was running it's 72 watt night power... i point blank asked their engineer who i know through professional circles on facebook

Here is KGEN-AM from Alaska, at about 8 seconds with the unmistakable "La Ley" liner.

A few minutes after that was recorded, I had KZSF La Caliente 1370 form San Jose

Here's KGEN 94.5 from Wyoming, with the legal id around 24 seconds:

We now have a much-needed Internet audio stream for KTIP "La Poderosa" in Porterville. The Shoutcast V2 server is at :

The stream is 96 kbps MP3. Raúl Rojas "el Potrillo" does weekday mornings live there 6am-10am Pacific Time.

If you understand Spanish you can check the KTIP ad-spot-load.. Sister station KGEN AM-FM also streams (see earlier thread post). The local economy is heavily ag-centric so the drought and labor-crippling Covid-19 pandemic have been double trouble for the Porterville area.

"La Poderosa" as a brand did not last long. KTIP is now "La Bonita" with the slogan "Sólo música bonita.." (Only beautiful music"). The new imaging/logo is at their Facebook site. I noticed a little more syndicated network content in the daily rotation too.

I wonder if it was a trademark issue or just too many "Regional Mexican" formatted stations in the market, even competing with JA's own KGEN. There is still some "Regional Mexican" content in the playlist but now less.

The station had been hinting at the format change for the last few weeks. For competition, Lazer Broadcasting's 104.3 "La Mejor" has shifted away from a Romantic format in the last few months so the KTIP format change fills a gap. Some Fresno stations have a more "contemporary-romantic" format like "Amor 92.1" but not exactly the same as the older KTIP playlist.

It looks like "El Potrillo", Raul Rojas, is gone from the morning shift at KTIP. It's too bad as his proramming style was very community-focused. I wonder what is the story?

Can someone explain how KGEN-FM gets to claim Hanford as its Community of License? The 3.3kw ERP generates a 70dBu contour that covers less than half the city. Perhaps the Hanford city limits grew over time or the license was grandfathered. Unfortunately, all their engineering filings are pre-2000 so no reports are readily available.

They probably used a Longley-Rice coverage map, which uses a more detailed terrain map to estimate the contours.

I don't know what map you are looking at, the one I see shows the city grade contour well north of Hanford, covering Laton and Lemoore.
