Jack 100.7 Hints Format Change

Local Media San Diego Program Director of KFMB-FM has hinted a format change soon to follow on Jack 100.7 FM.

My hint here could possibly flip to a Urban Contemporary format, it appears this is a missing SD market gap that may need to be filled.

In a market that is only 5% African American?

KFMB-FM was the third hghest biller in the market in 2014.

Highly unlikely KFMB will go R&B/Hip-Hop, plus the PD's credentials doesn't fall into that category. We can rule out Top 40, since partner station XHTZ has that covered since transitioning from Rhythmic.

If you look at who's now in the PD chair there, he has programmed two very well-respected alternative stations in FM 94/9 and 107-7 the End in Seattle.

Something tells me with the recent sale of KPRI and the PD's experience primarily in rock formats, you will see a flavor of harder-edged AAA on 100.7. My guess is it'll sound a lot like the old KPRI and have a lot of the features/staff from the old station as well.

Radio-X

Why would they copy (or at least resemble) a station whose ratings were lackluster and whose revenue stunk for many years on end?

I think we'll see a minor music tweak -- maybe something that sounds like Mix 96.9 in Phoenix -- along with discontinuation of the "Jack" moniker.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that billing largely from a very successful morning show- one that doesn't gel all that well with the Hot AC audience they are catering to the rest of the day?

I read they may go Classic/Mainstream rock to retain those DSC listeners after their show is done.

I don't know about their morning show billing, but I read somewhere recently that they were the highest paid morning show in San Diego.

The original post asks about a possible Urban format. Isn't KSSX Kiss 95.7 doing that?

I found it odd that KFMB-FM basically changed from Jack to Hot AC but kept the Jack brand. If Jack works pretty well in LA, and used to work well in SD, what happened?

I heard an ad during DSC this morning featuring Dave saying, paraphrased "Tune in on Saturday at 10am to see what's next."

Seems like it won't be long before we get to hear what they have in store once the Christmas music is over.

Simply put, the Jack brand is just that ... a brand. Musically, there are differences when you compare markets. In L.A., Jack is a cross between classic rock and old KROQ titles. In some markets, it has been more top-40 in musical approach. As you point out, in San Diego the brand stayed in place during a shift in musical direction.

"Jack" isn't a format per se.

They are now simply "100.7" for at least the next 9 days, and stunting with a "Playlist Of The Day". Today (12/26) is AC/DC Radio....as in the band of the same name. Hits, album cuts, live tracks and a few full concerts. The other 8 "formats" to come are being kept under wraps. Will make for interesting listening :) Oh yes, and the current air talent is still in place for this!

What could 100.7 do that isn't covered in the market? Could they possibly go out in left field and go to a talk format? Maybe country and go against KSON?

Pretty ridiculous

now playing bob marley of wheel of formats

Thing is this: this format stunting is really stupid and idiotic. This gimmick might have worked about 5-10 years ago, but at a time when terrestrial radio has made itself largely irrelevant by the work of their own hands, the stunting itself is irrelevant.

Local terrestrial radio needs to fight streaming radio by stations out of their market. KOGO loves to all itself the "news leader," but when news happens and I'm in the car, I first turn to KFI or KNX radio. The KFMB stations have become really ghosts of their past greatness. When I want to listen to intelligent talk radio (I know, this can be an oxymoron), I turn to podcasts or local shows in other markets.

By the way the "wheel of formats" is going, its mainly been 70's and 80's music.

Could we be looking at a Classic hits format on Jan 4th?

If not that then maybe Country. As KSON has a big chunk to go after.

James, never, never, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER presume what a station's new format will be when they are stunting like this. The odds are usually against the new format being one of the stunts ... except when they aren't.

Well its supposed to be disco day.
But this hour i have heard

Why cant this be love
Van halen
1986
And robert palmer
Best of both worlds
1978. Not excatly disco :(.

See, I told you not to presume anything when stunting is involved ...

I can only try their stream through TuneIn Radio -- what I heard is calling itself "The Outlaw" and you can guess what kind of music that is heh heh, so is this what's going on over the air at 100.7?

I have loved the week of stunting. The yacht rock day with a tip of the hat to WBUF Buffalo wss clasdic. Finally day of "rat pack" is today and then in to the new format. Any guesses on the name?? Pretty sure it will be a combo of classic rock and aaa. Looking forward to something new!
