Jack and Coke...er, KBIG isn't too bad

I got tired of all the political stuff on the AM band, so I started listening to more music in the car.

I gave Jack (93.1) another try and found it pretty listenable, a lot of the old ARROW songs mixed in with newer and different stuff.

KBIG has a different music mix, but a lot bolder than in years past (disco,
new wave, even an occasional "fun" rap song or two).

I find by switching between the two stations, I can almost always find a song that I like....

Give a listen to Star 98.7. Sounding great this weekend as the "Totally Whatever Weekends" are back. This could be a format fulltime for Los Angeles and be a huge winner. Much more variety than Jack. Marky Mark, Blue Oyster Clut, Kelly Clarkson, Commodores, Prince and Journey heard within the last 1/2 hour. Now if lightweight jocks like Bradley would only shut up I could enjoy it. At least overnights are jockless.

With Jack's ratings up look for "Totally Whatever Weekends" to be a staple there in the short term.

Streaming live online at www.Star987.com for those out of the market.

You're right about Star. They are sounding pretty good lately, but Bradley is really a pretty good jock. He may not have a great voice, but his content isn't bad and he has a pretty good personality. He's quite good with phoners, and thinks well on his feet.
Great content can overcome many other shortcomings. Besides, the term "jockless" offends me, as I'm sure it does many others who make their living on the air. Without jocks, radio stations are nothing more than juke boxes with commercials.

Plain and simple, Bradley sucks. His content isn't good. He does not know how to structure a set. He doesn't know how to set up a bit - IF you can call them that. He rambles. He has too many elements within one set. What else good would you like me to tell you abut him?

Without GOOD jocks who know how to present creative interesting content, radio stations should stick with the current Jack model.

Star's biggest problem is too much clutter and lightweight jocks who don't know know what the word "brevity" means. But you gotta love a station that is playing Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby" as I post this... even if it is the wrong remix that was never played in this market.

Just played Marky Mark on KCBS-FM within the last 40 minutes as well. Both played Cheryl Lynn tonight. The difference is KYSR is a little more contemporary and female.

But looked at weekends. - Until we get the book - we can only estimate in the extraps (the sample isn't always large enough to hit it perfect) but KYSR looks to be in the margin of error on the weekends in April and May 25-54.

Way too early to say if those weekends warrant a full time format - but they will likely keep it on the weekends and evaluate over the next few months.
But they need consistency to see if it works.

They've already evaluated.
Star's research shows that their target demo really responded to the "Totally Whatever Weekends". They backed off after Memorial Day weekend (which was actually a "Totally Whatever 80's Weekend") because they thought the weekends may be benefiting Jack. Which may be true.

There are plenty of songs being played on Star that are not on Jack. When have you ever heard Milli Vanilli, Sheena Easton, Gwen Stefani or Vanilla Ice on Jack? MUCH more female friendly.

Jack is way more male/rock-based and mostof those have a rhythmic/female feel to them. But long term would those songs work? My guess if you did a music test with Milli Vanilli, Sheena Easton, and Vanilla Ice - they wouldn't score very well.

In-house research over a few weeks doesn't correlate to Arbitron - and we've all seen that. And, you know how things generally test early. Believe me, I'm rooting for that music mix to work - because I like it - but from a research standpoint, I'm not sold yet until I see long term Arbitron success.

Jack is attracting near a 50/50 mix of male to female.

They've scored very well. Every song on Star is researched including these.

Star's research showed that many of their listeners were (are) checking out Jack.

Star hasn't lost audience due to Jack. I find that a good sign already.

Because we don't have three FULL months and the spring book back - we cannot define that. If you look at their cume and share in the trend (two months from spring, two weeks of Jack from winter, and last two weeks of Arrow), KCBS-FM has about 50,000 more cume male - and two hours more TSL. Their men 18+ share is also about 50% higher. Most likely their AQH will skew male. But maybe about 55-45.

And what I meant about more male is that Jack will skew much more male than Star - and that would be correct - even if your 50/50 guess is correct. KYSR in the winter was around 65% female.

I won't comment on that since I don't have access to KYSR's research.

Way too early to make that assumption either way. Let's wait for the spring book...

Well no one can accuse you of not having an opinion. The fact is that the type of radio heard on STAR is quite different from the type of radio that a lot of us grew up on. For a long time I felt as you do, but then I really started to listen to what they were doing. When a jock moves to a new station he or she is told what is expected of them on the air. If he was not doing what was expected of him, he wouldn't be there. Most deejays are molded by their PD's and I would think that's exactly what's going on at STAR. It's obvious Bradley is not your cup of tea, but that doesn't make him awful to his listeners or his boss. I too have air talent that I really don't care for. That's why there's a dial, so you can change the station to something you like better. If I were to do a post on every air talent that I didn't care for, we'd be here all night, but having been on the air for quite a while I know that every situation is different. I'm sure that there are those that hate me too. But I try to be mindful of how hard it is to please some of the bosses I've had and know that some of these people I listen to are going through the same thing.
Give the guy a break... To close, I doubt we agree on much. I can't stand Vanilla Ice...

>Ummm can we talk about how all of this research stuff and Arbitron ratings and what stations mix of 300-1500 titles has anything to do with developing a meaningful listener-station relationship. This thread talks about alot..except talent, promotions, glitz, music (not titles), news, weather, traffic..you know things that your audience can actually relate too. This is L.A., the number 2 market around, and some research types along with some assistant types have posted nothing substantial here with regards to how radio broadcasters can motivate listeners to become passionate about listening to your station.

We've talked about such things before, in various threads. The problem here in L.A. is that Clear Channel, Infinity, and ABC/Disney control the majority of the English language stations and they have little incentive to change the way they do things.

Even we consultants get tired of banging our heads against walls after a while. :)

To be honest, the English language stations need to steal a few pages from the playbooks of the Spanish language station ownership groups (Univision, SBS, and Liberman). Research the music but don't tighten playlists to the point of strangulation. Hire air personalities and keep them visible in the market outside of their airshifts. Do promotions that relate to the average listener, even if they aren't "big buck" promos. And keep it as local as you can when doing news, weather, etc.

I have started questioning whether traffic reports are really useful on radio; the sheer size of the market makes it impossible to make reports relevant for all those listening. Saul Levine had it right with K-Traffic, but the expanded AM band wasn't the right place for it yet.

That's all good in an old school radio world (where I come from and dream of again) but reality says radio companies are only interested in INSTANT rating success they can tout along with the bottom line and dividend to their shareholders. Examples: Infinity has already touted Jack Los Angeles success in the press as one of the main reasons they switched New York and Chicago and it hasn't even had a full book yet. Also, as reported in the trades, at the jammed packed Jack session at the R&R Convention last week, Jack's consultants said that air personalities don't need to be added unless a station has a high profile morning show. Music to the ears of many a radio executive ---> No payroll.

I disagree about "big" promotions. The bigger the better and don't clutter the station with a lot of small promotions. I believe in the tried and true KIIS philosophy dating back to 1983, BUY your listeners and keep it fun and simple.
