Jack and WODS

It's interesting to me that so many people think that Oldies 103.3 will be switching to Jack. I don't quite get it. Oldies 103.3's ratings are up a half a point in 12+, not sure what their "demo" numbers are. Jack in New York, WCBS-FM which is formally an Oldies station, is the lowest of the "big" New York stations. At one point, not too long ago, they were in the top 5. I don't see the success of Jack. If anything, I think that Oldies 103.3 might slowly change their moniker, perhaps to just WODS 103.3 and then eventually a new moniker like "Big Hits".

Infinity has dropped oldies from several of their stations this year, and many of those have flipped to "Jack FM" (although KFRC San Francisco has seen a major tweak to a 1975-89 oldies format with a handful of late 1960's songs occassionally sprinkled-in).

Perhaps it was a blessing that Entercom took the jump to create Mike-FM (much as I miss Star 93.7 dearly)...

Oldies is showing it's continued strength and WODS doesn't seem to be going anywhere...

Mix is up to their best numbers in a while....the "whatever weekends" I'm sure have helped...and it's allowed Mix to broaden the playlist without having to resort to the wholesale switch in music...

Boston continues to look like one of the strongest markets for Infinity...

...and probably one of the worst for Entercom. WEEI and WEEI-FM are clearly the company's best asset, though the ratings did just take a dip, putting WBZ back on top.

The new "Boston This Morning" show displays the uncertainty at WRKO, and the speculated new FM talker certainly isn't going to help.

Star's ratings were nothing to write home about, but Mike's presentation, music selection, and horrible ads certainly aren't helping WMKK to go anywhere in such a rock-friendly market as Boston. 93.7's powerful-but-rimshot signal can't be helping the in-city numbers, either.

At least if WBCN bites the dust, WAAF has a chance to steal Boston's modern-rock audience. For now, though, WAAF's numbers (at least 12+) do seem to some of the lowest in recent history.

Infinity's holdings definately seem to be strong. Oldies is good for now, but only time will tell the future success of the station, along with top-rated sister stations WOMC/Detroit and KRTH/Los Angeles. Mix seems fine as well.

But something has to happen with WBCN/WZLX come January, and the new station seems likely to be a talker with the Free FM branding. Infinity has domains for all of their existing talk stations, from successes like KLSX in Los Angeles (971freefm.com) to failures like WCKG in Chicago (1059freefm.com), along with 106.9 Free FM (slated for San Francisco's new 106.9) and 106.7 Free FM (expected to head to Portland, OR). Could they add 1007freefm.com or 1041freefm.com to the list? I wouldn't be surprised.

Jack has left the building.

Huh?
I don't think that at all.
Mike took care of that. This is old news...

We're more likely to see WBCN become a talk station.

I don't quite get it.

I asked about Big Hits awhile back and I think a diff. company has the rights to that name (Clear Channel?) It's used on WDRC-FM in Hartford.

Saw a copy of the NY Daily News today and there was a bit about ratings.
Big drop at 'CBS-FM from last yr when they were oldies.<P ID="signature">______________

WDRC-FM is not owned by Clear Channel, it's owned by Buckley Broadcasting.

WWBB "B-101" Providence also calls themselves "Big Hits" and they are owned by Clear Channel, so maybe there are no rights reserved for the slogan.

The reason folks saw ODS go KJack is because of what happened oin other markets and the fact their playlist is TOO TIGHT!

An occaional whatever weekend would be nice.

Where Will "Free FM Boston" Be?? (Was: Re: Jack and WODS)

If WBCN and WZLX are consolidated onto a single station, it will be on 104.1 under the WBCN call letters.

How do you know that for sure? Source on the "inside"?

If not, I would at least throw a "likely" or "probably" in there when speculating.

I have better idea for WODS - seeing as how they are "103".3 and playing music that many remember hearing on their sister station - WBZ "103"0 I suggest keeping the music but changing call letters and dredging through the WBZ archives for the original jingles, etc. WBZ 103 FM anyone?
