Jack Anderson dies: What was his radio career?

Investigative journalist Jack Anderson dies at 83.

What was Mr. Anderson's radio career?

I recall Jack at the beginning of his program, in a low, powerful voice, something similar to:

"THIS IS JACK ANDERSON's *WATCH!* ON WASHINGTON!"

I think his program was syndicated about 10 years ago at 9am Pacific, but I could be wrong. As a listener, I recall it was an alternative in the market to Rush and a local host.

Does anyone know of a source of archives for his program?

I would imagine that John Rothmann will discuss Mr. Anderson tonight on KGO.

(The irony is Anderson's death after a week of news of controversial potentially unconstitutional secretive activities of the current administration, but I'll leave interpretations/comparisons to the talk hosts, i.e. considering the thread below, perhaps Peter Werbe, Mike Malloy, and John Rothmann.)

Any info on his radio programs and on-line archives would be greatly appreciated. I enjoyed his programs.

WASHINGTON - Jack Anderson, the Pulitzer Prize-winning muckraking columnist who struck fear into the hearts of corrupt or secretive politicians, inspiring Nixon operatives to plot his murder, died Saturday. He was 83.

I believe Jack was on the Mutual Broadcasting System in the mid-70's for a while.

Can anyone remember more about that?

I recall they were short reports, two or three minutes, maybe a couple reports a day (or the station repeated one daily report a couple of times.)

It's so long ago I don't remember anything about the content. Were they sort of a promo for the newspaper column?

Yes, that's correct. WMCA in NYC carried him. I have some Mutual promo material
for his commentary somewhere in my radio stuff. His commentary was
more of a syndicated feature than a part of the Mutual Network, although it was fed through the Mutual network lines. It was not a part of the standard Mutual Network programming. Stations had to subscribe, as I recall.

As many have noted, Jack Anderson was a part of Mutual until the late 80's, when he became a part of UPI, then did a daily hour on Sonny Bloch's Independent Broadcasters Network...<P ID="signature">______________

WILM in Wilmington carried Jack Anderson's commentary from Mutual each weekday afternoon. If I remember correctly, his "shtick" was that he was an inside the beltway reporter who "broke the important stories" both on the air and in his newspaper column that the Wilmington News Journal didn't carry, so I can't comment about the quality if his column as I never had the opportunity to ever read it. Anderson's commentary style tended to have more "spice" to it than the daily commentary of CBS radio's Dan Rather. I enjoyed both Anderson and Rather's commentaries, they just used a different style of writing and presenting.
