Jack Arrives on Friday!

Dare I add: Master Jack by Two Jacks and a Jill?

Only Andy would remember it....

All I know is, it's a good thing for certain stations that the new Jack has such a suck signal--'cause all those "untested" songs add up to something so fresh, it would normally knock the crap out of Arrow, K-Hits, and any other 300 song/total playlist stations.

I listened for about 3 minutes and changed the station..it sucks, sucks badly.
If I wanted to listen to "The eclectic, iPod shuffle-like music format known as Jack FM " I would buy an Ipod. If I wanted to listen to 13 year old girl music, I would let my teenager ride up front.

If you only listened for 3 minutes, technically you only heard one song. Do I detect some drama here?

Nope, I am a Die hard classic ROCK fan, not techno, not hip hop, not rap. I am not going to support Cummulus sponsors, and I will not listen to their station.
I Liked Houston ROCK 103.7, and now I have to find another. My choice.

I know I said for sometime now I hoped Houston would never see the likes of Jack or Bob, but I gotta say, I dont hate it. Really I like it... alot. Its all I've listened to today. I find it interesting that Mark Landis (PD for the SA Jack) was the one who voiced the announcements before the flip. Wonder how that came to be?

Maybe Mark will make his way back to Houston at Jack here. We can always hope - I always enjoyed hearing him on KIOC - Orange.

Yea I always liked hearing him when he was hosting the 6400 and Netwerk broadcasts on 93Q. It was cool hearing him again

Just hang tight, I'm sure someone else will pick up the rock format real soon.

Interesting, just checked the FCC FM Query AND recnet.com and found the calls KHJK assigned to another Cumulus station in Lennox, SD on 8/21/2007. This station has a construction permit. Can someone explain this? I'm thinking those calls probably wont stay there.
Anyone...

KHJK has been assigned to that CP for a long time....Since Cumulus owns both KHJK and KIOL, they merely file for a swap and the FCC will grant it....Im sure they have already walked the application over to the FCC from their lawyers office in DC.....look for KHJK to be on 103.7 as the call in the next couple of days (maybe by tomorrow..if not, it will be Tuesday at the earliest)

Is he the same Mark Landis who does voice-overs for Bob-FM in Austin or Jack-FM in DFW? Well, I think Cumulus MIGHT need to improve its signal because it is sandwiched between Univision's KLTN (102.9) & Sister Top 40 KRBE (104.1)

They'd like to improve it but there's a good reason why it's not going to happen.

There's no spacing issue with Jack and 102.9. But their tower is essentially located as close as it can be to KRBE under existing FCC requirements and it's unlikely those rules will ever be changed. 103.7 is running very close to maximum power and antenna height, and any increase in either way would be barely noticeable. So unfortunately the signal they've got in Houston is probably about as good as it'll ever be.

What about a booster station like KQBU? I don't know much about the spacing issues, but I am pretty shure they can get one.

They could probably get one. But an on-channel booster, in theory, isn't used to extend the coverage of a station (like getting Jack into the west side, for instance). Instead, under FCC rules, they're intended to fill in gaps since a booster station's coverage area must be entirely within the main station's coverage area. That's especially handy in areas with hilly terrain (like San Diego, San Francisco, etc.) but with the flat land around here the benefit would be better penetration into buildings. So a booster for Jack might help around downtown but would probably have little effect on high-rise listening on the west side of town. One more point (and CW would probably be quick to agree): an on-channel booster can create problems where the two signals overlap and clash, especially if they're not in synch. Sometimes the idea works, other times it can be really ugly.

Oh yeah, I know that, but it could defenetly improve the signal over Houston.

It's true, Cumulus has some type of Engineering problem. Their HD from both rimshots is always off and the synch for KFNC HD was awful for the whole month of June.

Before when Sesquehanna owned KRBE, that was 100% true....BUT now with Cumulus owning both, there IS a way around it....IF they agree to a mutual interference contour document, Cumulus COULD move 103.7 closer...how much closer?? Well dont count on it showing up on the MO City towers......and to put up a new tower closer would cost 3-5million...it wont happen......On channel booster wont work either....it cannot extend the 1mV contour at all...NOW someone else could put a translator on and put 103.7 on another channel....but they cannot be associated with Cumulus at all....

But CW, wouldnt 3-4 million for a new tower be a drop in the bucket compared to the increased billing for an improved signal, and Im no structural engineer, but could the existing tower be dismantled and reassembled somewhere else?

THe 3-5 mill is the cost of the steel alone...you need LAND to put it up and the FAA clearance to build it....lots of lawyer time and searching, etc.....would be 3x much more by the time its done....considering Cumulus spent 32.5mill for 103.7 BEFORE building the tower, yeah, it would be a drop in the bucket..but again, finding the land and getting the FAA ok is another thing.....They could dismantle the current tower now that the AUXs can be run......but I think it would be cheaper building a new one and keeping the old one up.....(that why a lot of two way towers have lots of unused Heliax hanging on them...costs more to take down than its worth)

Here is the link to the Dallas JACK-FM flip:

Enjoy! ;D

Thanks!!!

Also have been comparing their streams....Dallas' KJKK (done by CBS itself) is doing an excellent processing on their stream....good level on music and spots, etc....Houston's JACK (done by streamaudio.com) however is as bad as it was as KIOL...hot to cold in the same song; as much as 5-10db I would guess...trying to record the stream like I do with the Dallas JACK is rough...their audio sounds dull on the stream compared to DFW and even Houston's over the air sound...I guess I'll keep recording DFW's JACK...and listen to Houston only on the radio.....unless Cumulus gets their stream fixed (like a Optimod 6200 or similar.....geesh even a Compellor would help...they may have one already but it aint set right!!!.....A Optimod 1100 PC would be ok! I like them)
