Interesting to see lack of commentary, other than an obit and Shaughnessy piece in the Globe, on the passing of former Globe broadcast sports critic Jack Craig.
He was the first to actually report on broadcasting in general and radio in particular. Yes, it was oriented toward sports coverage, but at the time radio reporting consisted of the occasional nostalgia piece and rewrites of press releases, while television reporting was the purview of "critics" such as Percy Shain, Eleanor Roberts and Anthony LaCamera, none of whom really dug or questioned what the broadcasting executives told them.
Eventually he was joined by Dave O'Brian (cq) at the Phoenix but Craig was the trailblazer and remains still much the best, especially compared to the halfhearted attempts to report on the industry today, when we have people, especially on the Web, who actually pretend to report when all they so is present reboiled material from other sources.
