Jack Cristil retiring

The Clarion-Ledger's Brandon Marcello is reporting that according to source, MSU's venerable play-by-play announcer is set to step away from the microphone after 58 years due to health concerns and is expected to announce this during tonight's game vs. LSU (if he hasn't done it already since the game is currently on). Cristil is expected to call his last game this Saturday at Tennessee.

While not an MSU fan, I've always looked forward to hearing Jack's voice whenever their games are on. I would love to have a conversation with him (though I know it'd be a very long one) about the moments he's seen in MSU sports and I'm sure he'd have plenty to tell, everything from the wind-blown failed field goal attempt against Mississippi to the Final Four appearance in 1996. Do you have a favorite Jack Cristil moment?

So long, Jack. You're a rare breed.

I'll miss him at the State football games. He's one of a kind and a perfect gentleman.Filling those shoes will not be easy.Jack is a great adlibber.A legend takes it to the house.

I grew up standing behind, and working in the press box.My father was producer/director of Miss.State sports for 27 years. He and Jack never missed a game together in all years! i wish I could tell all the stories about those great days, even though we mostly lost!! I love you Jack and will miss---- " You Can Wrap This One In Maroon and White" !!!! Joe Phillips, Orange Beach, AL

I cannot imagine MSU Bulldog PBP without Jack Cristil. We've had legends doing football and basketball PBP at Arkansas: Bud Campbell, Paul Eells, Sam Smith, Dave Woodman, and Mike Nail (whom did Men's BB PBP for 30 years before retiring last season), but Jack is among the best. I "discovered" Cristil's distinctive voice on the FM dial 30 years ago doing football/basketball games when tuning between the local stations here.

Sadly, Cristil's style of radio PBP has become a lost art because of television. While I was not a frequent listener to MSU radio PBP, Jack had a way giving the facts and painting the mental picture without BS.

gosh the number of hours I sat at a board while Jack Cristil called MSU games. He is one of a kind.

He definitely was good at drawing a picture in your head.

Spent many Saturday's during my teen years into my early 20's behind a control board watching the VU meters move to Jack Cristils voice. He is one of a kind and irreplaceable.
