Now there's "Jack-FM" on 101.1, replacing WCBS-FM heritage Oldies format. I was totally surprised to tune past 101.1 a few minutes ago and hear the Eurhythmics, and also Golden Earring, Hoobastank, Bon Jovi and more "Jack" fare. A lot of variety, maybe too much.

WCBS-FM is one of the clearer New York City FM signals here in the Hudson Valley. Will "Jack" have any impact?

No.

I doubt the switch will have a significant impact, at least I hope not in the Mid Hudson Valley (I hope no station here makes the switch). 92.9 WBPM, the station that could gain listeners drops off south of Poughkeepsie, where WCBS- FM had the decent signal. That said , I think it is a sad day for NY radio .While it was inevitable the this awful Jack format fad would come to New York it would have made much more sense for Infinity to switch struggling WNEW -FM which has not had an identity since they dropped classic rock. WCBS-FM had fairly consistent ratings in the 3.3 -3.5 range, and had legendary status among listeners. While WNEW ratings have been half that. I guess it all come down to demographics. The experts don’t care about listeners over 50. Everybody wants the younger audience. Well, I have news for them WE ARE NO WHERE NEAR DEAD! Who retires at 50? In my view we are at the peak of our careers, our children are for the most part grown giving us more expendable income. WCBS- FM is no longer a heritage station, just another one of a sea of stations going for the same piece of the pie, changing formats every few years.

While the music isn’t all bad it is trying to please to wide of an audience. Worse still according to news reports they plan to run the station jockless, with no news weather, to focus on the music. In other words, just a computer spiting out music at random, no human on air element involved. How awful is that? Although it does to a degree reflect reality in today’s radio, I think their liner “We play what we want so don’t ask for requests to be arrogant.

I am enjoying Jack, but I want CBS FM more! On the subject of weather, a liner said, "want to know that weather? Look outside" or something like that. Yo Jack! Just tell us the weather!<P ID="signature">______________

Its doubtful JACK will have any impact since all of what it
plays is duplicated in some form or another by existing stations.
