JACK-FM Hits A Milestone

JACK-FM, which was born right here in the Northwest with Vancouver's 96.9, then Victoria's 103.1 and Seattle's 96.5 has crossed the pond to the UK. Oxfordshire's 106 JACK-FM (106.4 MHz) went on the air today at 1:00 PM UK time (5:00 AM US Pacific. - The UK is 8 hours ahead of us here.)

The format is similar to the US/Canadian versions of JACK. But with a bit of a UK twist. First the UK voice over isn't Howard Cogan, it's Paul Darrow. Playlist includes "Pull Up To The Bumper" Grace Jones, "The Right Thing" Simply Red, "Girls Talk" Dave Edmunds (songs you'd wish the Seattle/Vancouver/Victoria JACKs would get hip to.)

Thanks, Original.

Sent this link off to a bunch of my radio geek friends. The consensus is that they are staying a lot closer to the original model than the Americans. Which is good. Jack Vancouver is a real radio station. Jack Seattle is a low cost solution to an otherwise historically doomed frequency.

I always think of the American Jack format as like a river delta...wide but shallow. Many different artists, but only the shallowest of tracks (1 to maybe 4 tops) from each artist. And god help you if you are a new artist. You can only get so much mileage out of the shock of going between divergent artists. It doesn't get great numbers but it sure is cheap to operate...imagine if they really tried? I mean, a Jack with every fifth song from this century...and real community oriented jox...now THAT would be something. Something I hear every day on 96.9 Vancouver. Not so much south of the 49th.

Just clicked on the link and the first song i heard after the first "jack" liner was "Pretty Woman" Roy Orbison now thats original! Then Rock Lobster by the B-52's and it looks like the next song is going to be Mama Mia by Abba! Yes its Abba and Mama Mia. The Winamp player tells you whats coming up next and that would be "Lucky Man by Verve. Interesting to say the least! The jack voice is O. k.
