Jack FM in Houston

I travel in my job so I was down in Houston all week long.

On 103.7 down in Houston, it is known as JACK FM, yet it isn't the same announcer's voice that they use
at 100.3 here in Dallas, and they also say it is a Cummulus (sp?) station, and I know JACK FM here is a
CBS station.

What's the deal?

Thanks!

As you stated KHJK/La Porte (the Houston Jack) is owned by Cumulus, while KJKK is owned by CBS Radio. Different companies pay money to use the Jack imaging resulting in the obvious. A Jack owned by CBS in one market and Cumulus in another. There are also Jacks operated by Clear Channel, Border Media and Emmis just here in Texas. (Well...Emmis Austin's Jack is called Bob, but whatever)

Another thing should be glaringly apparent to you when comparing Dallas' Jack with Houston's. Jack Houston leans a lot more rock/alternative than most Jacks do. The difference is like night and day between Houston's Jack, programmed by Steve Robison who is well known in these parts for helping create our alternative station "The Buzz", and the Jack's in S.A., Dallas, or in The Valley. I know that Frank Sinatra was a part of the rotation in Dallas, and may still be, while the only time Jack here skews away from the rock genre is for the occasional Tone Loc tune.

In Houston the standard "Jack" voice was phased out a few months ago, about the time live air talent started showing up during the daytime. Still has a huge playlist, and is one of the few stations here I can still stand to listen to.

A key Houston competitor to KHJK would be Cox's KHPT, an "80's and More" format which has finally started to expand its mind-numbingly repetitious playlist.

If CBS is planning to keep the JACK format in D/FW they should move Jagger to JACK mornings... They are dying on The Fan.

The Point isn't really a bad station to listen to in Houston, and the other one that is doing better is 107.5, just don't know what the call sign is or exactly the format, but I wouldn't call it an "oldies" station.

Thanks for the clarification of the different Jack's around the nation. I thought they were all using that same "voice", so that is what really sounded odd.

Yes, I'm in Austin right now and there is a "Bob" FM and it is "trying" to be Jack.
