Jack FM (KJXK)

Does Jack FM seem weaker than the other 2 stations? 101.9 and 104.5? Here just south of Austin, I use to be able to pull in Jack FM, even with the LP 102.7 in Austin. Now it seems like the 102.7 in Austin is coming in even stronger or KJXK is just not broadcasting the power like it use to.

Works fine over here. Or maybe it's got something to do with the 102.7 translator in Austin switching to a mono signal. I've heard that mono signals can be stronger than stereo signals.

In Taylor, KJXK screamed over K274AX, most everyday from November to late January. Occasionally, I still get them, however now both are blown away from Houston-area stations operating on the adjacents.

There are many who believe that the fringe area reception of a mono FM signal is a bit better than the same signal in stereo. It's fairly subjective as it has to do with the "feel" of the station, not the signal strength.

My first FM, which had no cochannel, adjacent channel or second adjacent channel interference for about 1000 miles around, sounded better in areas 100 to 125 miles from the transmitter when in mono than when in stereo. When in stereo, it just got a tiny bit fuzzy.

Technologically speaking, a mono signal is not stronger than a stereo signal, so switching the 102.7 translator to mono shouldn't cause additional interference.

The benefit of mono happens in the receiver. A receiver hearing a 19 khz stereo pilot uses that to decode the L-R information that is centered at 38 khz. This effectively makes the receiver bandwidth 53 khz. That is 15 khz mono audio, plus the L-R info at 38 khz +/- 15 khz.

A mono signal will not turn on the stereo decoder, so it only uses 15 khz of bandwidth. Since signal/noise and bandwidth are related, the mono signal will enjoy a significant (22 db1) s/n advantage over the stereo signal. Where the signal strength is sufficient for full-quieting the receiver, that is probably insignificant to the listener, but in fringe areas, it often means the difference between hearing / not hearing the station.

I wonder if the fact that 102.7 in Austin has a bit louder volume also plus the fact that it is in mono, effecting Jack FM? I have not been down San marcos way in a while to see how the 2 do with each other.

I am in San Marcos today. I have noticed that KJXK and K274AX are interfering with each other around the Texas State Campus, and along Aquarena Springs Dr. I imagine south of the downtown square, KJXK is a bit clearer.

At the San Marcos Greyhound Station I can pick up 102.7 Jack FM along with BOB FM while waiting for the Bob Cat Tram. And that is on a Panasonic AM/FM cassette walkman.

IIRC-- The Texas State campus has the only line-of-sight to Austin from San Marcos for the TV news live trucks. So it makes sense that 102.7 from Austin would reach that spot. That doesn't mean you can pickup the Austin translator all around San Marcos.
