Jack-FM off again

12+ Jack-FM, WCJK-FM has been sliding in each book and trend. It is now
half of the 8-ish share it had when it topped out. Oldies was doing better in 12+
but probably not as good in demo. I assume this is just the same slide that
the format is taking across the country. Are we done with this automated, liner
radio crap yet? ???
 
25-54 they have fallen to #3. As an oldies station, they hadn't made the Top Ten in years.

And I suspect you'll see more of this liner radio for a while. With no jocks and fewer headaches, stations can bill less and still make more money (See Jack-FM in Knoxville which has a third of its 12+ oldies audience, but is more profitable).
Eventually satellite will kill all the jukeboxes, even the ones with live jocks.
 
Yep. I'm afraid that the "Live Jock" may be a dying breed. :mad:
"Live and local" is the best chance.
I like for a live jock...located in the same region of the country as me, to talk about things happening here and now. If it's raining...mention it. If it's hot...mention it! (Etc.)
Make a reference to passing a local landmark on your way to the studio today.
"Did you see that guy selling shrimp over on Jefferson today?" "I tried to buy some, but I couldn't tell which smelled worse...the shrimp or his breath!" Stupid..but LIVE and LOCAL.
It makes way for a real connection between the station and the audience.
Real stations like that in big and small towns would still do well, I believe.
But, with the LOOOOOOW cost of syndication and V/T and various automation like "Liner" radio...It'll be tough. Especially with the computers allowing a guy to V/T a whole show for several stations from a computer set up in his bedroom.
You not only save the pay...but there's no insurance to carry(Worker's comp. and medical) no taxes to pay, etc.
I hope for the longevity...but I dunno...
 
I agree with all my heart Meep. things are just too automated. at my first radio experience the afternoon show was live, but one guy was in the control room and the other was three hours away in the office of a company he owned... anyway... i begg for the return of live and local jocks... i've seen it happen in a couple small markets in west tennessee and northern mississippi... but not much
 
It's very cheap to run a show like "John-Boy and Billy" as compared to all the direct and indirect costs of paying employees to cover the same shift.
I drove through Nashville again recently and heard "Jack-FM" again. I do enjoy the music format, (if you hate the song playing now, chances are you'll really like the next one), but I think that same music could be better utilized with live, local jocks.

I'll take a mediocre live local jock over a polished professional V/T every time.

side note:

With the possible weirdness in your general area, I was concerned a bit when I tuned in and some other jock was on in the afternoon, instead of YPGR.
I was glad to hear him back this week as it was only vacation.
Ha! He disappeared from this board recently like a yankee preppy at a Molly Hatchett concert,
(The Prez prolly had something to do with it)
so I began to wonder when I didn't hear him.
Anyway, tell him Meep says hey and remember it's not called the "Shut up and Rock Show" for nothing! Ha! He'll know who you mean. He's a cool dude.
 
A few small town stations in East Tenn are still live. WBNT-FM in Oneida still has Live jocks even on the weekends. WJLE in Smithville are live to.
 
yeah YPGR took a much needed cruise and mental vacation. He's much better for it. Glad to have him back. Say what you want about the show... the man is a production "geen-yahs"
 
LOL I'm here! Thanks for noticing meep! Let's do lunch! By the way, did you catch my national Television debut? Check out HGTV's "If Wall Could Talk" this Friday at 5:30pm CT. Oh and I drank a few Banana Daiquiris on the ship in honor of all my radio buuuuuuuuuuuudies!

Just had some good ol' OLD TOWNE SPAGHETTI STORE grub last night.
Had to drive to the big town (compared to here) for some supplies.
It's always a nostalgic trip when I get back to Jackson.
The days of the Q-102 and The "New" 92 FM (recall it was New for over 10 years) rivalry were amongst some of my favorites in ALL my radio years. (Maybe because we kicked their butts with a 3000 watt station all the time!!!HAHAHAHA)
My buddy Jim likes it when I remind him of that.
Couldn't beat Da-Wuuf" though.
The little private college honeys...
I used to tape their dirty little calls and play parts of 'em back on the air.
J. Michael Pruitt fired me once for that. (Called and hired me back before the next shift)
Of course , there were a LOT of things I did back then that I no longer do...(HA! And some i CAN'T DO!)
We worked together on Carriage House drive for a bit, I believe.
I was out of radio and selling Pharmeceuticals, and old Sykes conned me back to do some Saturday afternoons or something. (He just knew I was jonesing)
I'm glad he finally matured! He's doing mornings on some oldies station in N. Miss., and doing afew shifts on the Elvis channel on satelite radio.

Gregg, did you work at FM-100 about 12 or 13 years ago?
 
I wish I could say I did. Sorry, no. Great station and nice folks. I would have loved to have been a part of that legacy. I went to broadcast school in Memphis, but never landed a job at any of the stations there. Larry Gullett and Bill Banister were two of my instructors. ;) That was TWENTY years ago.

Whatever happened to Larry? Was Tim Brown there at that time, too?
 
I haven't talked to Larry in years. I'd love to see him again. I think Tim was there then as was Chris Ruleman. (sp?)

Corinth MS has a Station that runs live all day and most nights and weekends.

There is one in Selmer that is now Local again. and Martin, TN ( WCMT.COM ) has been one of the most die hard local stations I have ever heard

25-54 slip, BIG slip in 18-34, especially with men and not much better with women. Overall it is a downward trend over the entire book. In some cases moving from 2-3rd positions to 8-9th. Although 25-54 looks good the unique quality of this station was appealing to many demos with focus on 25-54 core. I repeat, all slipped. Loosing the interest of the younger demo, will the older follow?
 
you're quoting me before the book...and yeah...Jack did take a hit
(but was strong before that). WNRQ took a lot of prime demo back this time.
 
I'm glad it took a hit! I think it's a fad. Like Alice and Mary and all the others before. That's my opinion any way and I hope I'm right!
