Jack FM question

As I recall in L.A. CBS ran 2 stations, KCBS FM was Jack and KRTH played a regular format, so you had a choice in L.A. you can guess what my choice was.

I have another question about Christmas music on Jack stations: In recent years WASL 100.1 in Dyersburg, TN has had what they call A Jacked up Christmas on CHristmas Eve and morning until Noon. where they play Christmas music that fits the Jack format. Do other Jack stations do something similar and do they use the same playlist? On WASL they played everything from easy listening to rap.

The big problem is that it doesn't run long enough. It will run from about 5 or 6 PM Christmas Eve until Noon Christmas day. I wish they would run it longer, especially with Christmas falling on a weekend like it is this year.

With all of the "Christmas" stations that start their Christmas music right after Halloween and continuing until the 25th or some even to New Years Day, not to mention numerous SIRIUS XM and i-heart stations on the net, does it have to be a "Jack" station?

Depends on ownership and market. Fargo’s Jack went all-Xmas last month, and will be going with it until the 26th. Only other in-market options, I believe, were classic hits-formatted KEGK and non-comm Christian KFNW-FM. If you feel you can garner some ad buys and a bit of $ out of it by going all-Xmas, it doesn’t hurt, Jack or not.

Locally programmed Jack stations are welcome to play Christmas music as they feel necessary. Many Jack stations are in markets with AC or Classic Hits stations that go 24/7 Christmas and choose to stay 100% in regular music as counterprogramming.

Here in Nashville, the A.C. station and the Jack-FM station are sister stations, so for Jack to go heavily into Christmas, it would almost be like cannibalizing the A.C. station.

Local Radio Network, which syndicates JACK-FM, also provides an unbranded All Christmas format for use from November 1 through December 31. I believe the clocks are identical, so any LRN affiliate can make use of the format.

I assume most stations choose to end it on Christmas day simply to avoid burnout. I mean really, how much Mariah Carey screeching "All I Want For Christmas Is You" can one person stand before they spew eggnog out both ends?
