JACK-FM to Wausau/Stevens Point

Muzzy Broadcasting's WSPT/Wausau-Stevens Point flipped to the ABC Radio Network's Jack-FM format at midnight on Monday. No airstaff were effected by the switch.

Makes perfect sense for Rick. He has crap for budget and it doesn't take much to run the station off the bird. This is probably a result of Midwest Communications flipping WOFM to Rhythmic CHR and tweaking WIFC to Adult CHR/Hot AC leaning.
______________

All I can say is... FINALLY! FINALLY WE GOT A JACK in Central WI! I have been waiting for one for a long while now! WSPT wasn't any good local, sounded poor in all aspects, finally sounds a little professional.
______________

Weren't they working with McVay Media as an AC station?
I guess he saves a lot of money on all angles.

They were Hot AC for a LONG time... for many years I think.. Since '99 they were pure Hot AC, before that, more of a modern AC. Not sure about McVay Media though. Half the music was in mono, the imaging was in mono, and they had a major channel and bass issue. It got the ratings it deserved, in the 2's. It was like no money being put into that 100kW'er. It was kinda sad.

There is barely any money being put into this, but at least it sounds decent!

I think WSPT became pure AC around Spring 2000, and before that spent a couple of years or so as a modern alternative station (Garbage and Smashing Pumpkins were common on that playlist). The move today by Muzzy is good on three fronts: (1) Going off-the-bird will save some dough; (2) it's going to a popular format ("Jack"); and (3) if it's a product that gains good word-of-mouth, WSPT might finally gain some ears (though that's not a guarantee).

Huh, I don't remember them being pure AC... I remember in the mid 90s, the station being called "Revolution 98" with a Modern AC/Alternative type format, never really hard though.

Then in the late 90s, dropped the Revolution 98 for 98 WSPT.. . I have an aircheck from 1998-1999 from them calling themselves "98 WSPT, Today's Music Revolution".

In 1999-2000 or so, they changed over to pure Hot AC with "98 WSPT, Real Music Variety From the 80s 90s and today", however never remembered them as an AC (Though at around this time, Y108 was a pure AC as 107.9 WYCO, previously Y108 with a Hot AC format).

In a year or so, they dropped the 98 for 97.9. This also was when their sister, 104.9 WKQH, changed to 104.9 KQH with Classic Hits, previously KROCK 105 with classic rock.

97.9 kept on for a while now, as 97.9 WSPT. It seemed as of recently, they have been trying to change their imaging, dropping the 97.9 for 97-9 WSPT, with The Best Mix of the 80s 90s and today. This seemed to fail as well, and now we got Jack.

Basically, that is what I remember from WSPT, starting in the mid 90s (I have lived in Wausau since the early 90s). I have kept pretty close tabs on this station, as it always was of interest to me. Recently, it seemed to stop improving, which makes sense now.

Just my 2 cents.

WSPT was CHR until 1994, when it flipped to "Sunny 98" a gold based Soft AC.
The Sunny name only lasted a few months, but the soft AC remained for about a year until the music began to shift and artists like Hootie, Alanis, Sheryl Crow, really began to redefine pop music at the time. Then WSPT dropped the gold based AC titles.
It went through some variations in music and slogans during late 90's and early 2000's.

I worked at WSPT 1994 to 1997 and always thought the Audio sounded great.
An Old Optimod and two audio prisms and no mic processing!

Hmmm that seems to fill in the void that I don't remember (We arrived in Wausau when I was in Kindergarten, about 1994-1995) That could be why I don't remember Sunny. The first I knew about WSPT was when it was Revolution 98, which, if I am correct, was around 1996-1997ish.

I work with some people right now who worked for Muzzy for a bit, and they also told me about the lack of mic processing. I wonder if they still use the old optimod, because right now the audio is lacking.

Did they use Scott Studios at that time? Or was it shortly after you were there, that they got it? I am using it at the station I am at, I think it is great.

Thanks for the great info!
______________

CD's and carts!
Scott came in around 1996 I think.

I was always amazed how good the processing sounded, but as I was thinking about it we did have two Valley Mic Processors. The Zastrows knew how to make a station sound good.
