JACK FM - UK

JACK FM is now doing full music test transmissions in the Oxfordshire area of England. The music generally sounds pretty good so far though it is VERY different to the JACK FM stations that I've heard in the US and Canada and is more a Classic Hits type station.

Judging from the music played so far the station is definitely more adult contempory rather than rock biased and seems to be softer and aimed at an older audience. I have to be honest I'm missing the classic rock slant that is a big part of the format in North America - I hope they will play more British rock acts when they launch e.g. the less played stuff from Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, Def Leppard, Blue Nile etc. The rock that they do play tends to be of the softer type. The music played so far also seems to be pretty safe - they tend to be playing the more obvious songs that come to mind when you think of an artist or band, that many other stations also repeatedly play - I haven't yet heard many songs that don't already get airtime on UK radio. I'm really hoping that they will be more adventurous once they launch as radio in this country is pretty dull and generally bland and unimaginative with most stations playing the same overplayed songs and all aiming for a slice of the same mainstream audience. Hardly any stations are willing to take any risks and those new stations that do start by doing something different tend to panic and immediately switch to more mainstream music if the first audience figures aren't what they'd hoped for. It's still only tests however so JACK FM UK can't be judged in any way yet.

JACK FM will officially launch at 1:06 PM BST here in the UK (08:06 AM EDT) on Thursday 18th October . There are also 3 more digital only stations planned for Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire (together as one region), Northamptonshire and Cheshire from 2008.

Due to severe restrictions on internet radio imposed by the music copyright agencies here in the UK it is unlikely that you will be able to hear the station outside of the UK unless you go through a proxy server, though a recording of the launch should be made available and hopefully they'll post a few highlights of the station too - so that people outside of the UK can get an idea of the station.

I'm listening to the stream (playing a test transmission recorded by the breakfast show crew) and I agree that this will be very good!

(Cool Edit set to start recording at 7:50am EDT)

Thought I'd repost my first thoughts on a UK radio forum:

Yeah having listened now all afternoon (took a flexi day off work!) I’m not keen on the on air imaging - Although I wasn’t expecting to hear Howard Cogan I was expecting it to sound a lot more hip and in your face. The stereotypical stiff upper lip Brit style just doesn’t do it for me. Some of the liners are funny admittedly - i.e. “Two radio’s did it and JACK was born” made me laugh out loud but once you’ve heard them once it’s not the same when you hear them again. Somehow the Canadian guy Howard Cogan who does the VO’s for most of the North American JACK stations always manages to sound cool and fresh no matter how many times I hear him - maybe that’s because I’m English and a North American accent on the radio always sounds different and rather cool. Oxfordshire may be one of the most conservative parts of England (look what happens when they try to change the jingles on Radio Oxford!), but it just doesn’t appeal to me. If you remember the old style BBC continuity announcers you’ll probably like the VO’s - that’s WAY before my time though!

Other observations - the automation isn’t quite going to plan - i.e. announcing ad breaks that aren’t there, not going into the news on the hour and a classic moment that I wish I’d been able to record where the VO guy was talking about Chaos Theory and how not even JACK knows what’s going to play next - turned out to be the previous track again! Also where is the drivetime travel news?!

Musically though it sounds great. If I could listen out and about here there would be no need to listen to anything else other than specialist programmes on the BBC - It’s just the on air imaging - I hope they’ll end up sounding a lot more hip in a year’s time.

How do you think our version of JACK FM compares to those in the USA and Canada? I think it sounds bloody good myself - certainly as good as anything I've heard from North America. JACK FM Oxford has taken a 3 hour break for local sports coverage (that's the only annoying thing about it) and I'm back listening to JACK FM NEW YORK. Musically it doesn't sound half as good now - I think our JACK FM has a wider and more varied playlist.
