I totally agree about Americana and AAA. I also think it would be great if the public stations broadened thier scope using the new technology. There's been a long standing debate about how College stations are best used.
The Public Radio template used by KGOU, KOSU, and KCSC is one.
Some feel that universities should run stations that offer working stations closer to what broadcasting students will encounter when they get out into the professional world. Make it more like a commercial station for the benefit of the students. What percentage of people get out of school and then spend thier careers working in public radio? Not many. That's another one.
And there's another school of thought that the stations should serve the college community in terms of thier content...i.e.: play "underground" music, "world" music, etc. There have been instances in the past when college radio's support of some artists helped kick off major trends in the more mainstream formats.
I think there are a lot of interesting possibilities with HD. What if you had a station like KATT for example, where you had the main format, then you had an "alternative leaning" version of the same station, and also a "classic rock"-leaning version? You could place stopsets at different times, so that when one station hit a break, listeners could punch over to one of the adjacent versions rather then going to the competition. (Sponsors and agencies might throw a fit, but hey...) You could have the same jock doing a live show on one of them and voicetracking the other two.
I think if Jack had a better signal it would be a significant competitor, as it stands now, I'm not so sure. It'll be interesting to find out. They seem to be going about it in kind of a mickymouse way, but never underestimate the Tylers. They have a history of succeeding at things that aren't supposed to work.
