Over at the Variety Hits board, mikesingh had an interesting post about Jack FM.

Here it is:

Just to clarify things... I'm a 19 year old West Indian guy. At first glance, you might not think that someone like me would like Jack FM... but I do. I really do.

I've known about Jack FM since my uncle in Toronto introduced it to me back in June '03 (not long after that Jack debuted) and I immediately loved it. The randomness of the music, the snarky comments of the Jack character. It was something new, something refreshing. After coming back to NY, I looked to see if Jack was in NY (I wasn't into radio at the time) but didn't find one. So I would stream Toronto's Jack most of the time. I kept listening even after they introduced DJs and enjoyed the music.

Then, it happened. June 3rd, 2005. Jack FM hits NYC. I personally was shocked to see it took WCBS-FM's place... but my wait was over. Jack FM was finally available to me over the radio. I have been listening to Jack daily since I found out about it (a few days after the debut, I believe June 8th) and haven't stopped since.

While I must admit, that this Jack FM is too classic rock-intensive (not a complaint as I love classic rock) but work needs to be done on the playlist. This Jack needs to be fine-tuned to NYC. NYC is a unique market with a lot of people being minorities.

If ANYTHING needs to be done musically, I'd say drop the classic rock a bit, pop on some more Hot AC tunes, throw some of WNEW's classic dance on there, mix it up evenly so nothing sounds like it's leaning any way... and take the fight to 106.7 Lite FM (WLTW). (On 106.7 Lite FM's wikipedia page it says that Lite FM is "a Jack FM with personalities and traffic reports")

Personality-wise... I say go for it. Initially, I was all for the no-jock approach, but seeing as that isn't helping matters, they should do it. BUT PLEASE, do it in a way that won't take away from the music. We don't need smart-ass DJs (we have Jack for that), we don't need a "Z Morning Zoo"-style morning show. We need personalities very similar to Canada's Jack FM stations (sans Toronto, who is now jock-free). Their DJs do a fine job of "manning the ship" without taking away from the Jack FM experience.

Forgive me for the length of this post, but I needed to get it off my chest :p I've been a part of other radio boards, but they are filled to the brim with anti-Jack folk. At least here, there are some pro-Jack people to make it better. I also have a feeling this post should be on the NYC board... but I'm not sure. Feel free to move this if you think so.

How many 19 y/o radio listeners know all that format lingo? This person is either not what they represent or a rare species and I don't just mean cause he knows all about radio, but also likes jack... <P ID="signature">______________

I don't think so, buddy. Every word of that post is 100% me and opinion. Yes, I AM a Jack FM fan, and no, I don't care if you don't agree with me.

"Insider Lingo"? Man, I WISH I was an insider, and I knew the inner workings.. I'd give them my 2 cents on fixing things. Too bad I'm not. I'm just a college student in my 2nd year trying to get into radio as a career.

So before you go trashing people's posts and opinions and spamming about how you want YOUR favorite kind of music (which isn't bad by the way.. I like punk) should go on a big frequency... just.. calm down.

Instead of trying to flip things 360 (as much as I like punk, I have extremely high doubts that it will ever become the major genre on a major station here in NYC) why not try to give input on how to try and remedy the current situation without going overboard.

Seriously though, you might not be meaning to troll... but it seems that you are. I've been apart of many other message boards where the mods/admin would have banned you already. Just consider yourself lucky.

..and c'mon.. give Jack a chance. Jack plays bands like The Clash.. one of the original punk bands.

The little "flashback" I provided by the way.. wasn't to make it seem like I'm a Jack FM groupie... it was meant to show that I'm not a "flash of the moment" format lover. I've liked the Jack format even before it got popularity in the US... and I just wanted to show that. Sorry if it seemed like a bad love letter.


...AND BY THE WAY... I accept the Jack-Off Award graciously... :p

well, if you enjoy it, good for you, you're entitled to your opinion; it seems the majority of NY area radio listeners feel a bit more strongly in the direction I'm coming from,I'd prefer the original 'oldies' format, or my WPNK 'punk' model, over the current,uninspired mess currently clogging up the airwaves.I stand by all of my statements,we're staying the course, fight em there so we don't have to fight em here.....but you're certainly entitled to your opinion.

Hey, man. I TOTALLY agree with you. I AM rare. Very few of my friends listen to the radio. The ones that do.. are because of me.

I want to get into radio as a career (I'm in 2nd year of college). I read a lot of the industry websites (FMQB, All Access and more) and I frequent the different message boards (this one, NYRMB and the WCBSFM.org board).

As I said in my post... I've liked Jack since 2003... even since before it got popular in the US and was just catching ground in Canada.

I don't mean to be misleading at all. I think everyone's just surprised because I'm just so radically different than my age group. I can't talk to my friends about this stuff... that's why I'm here. To talk to those who are like-minded (in one way or another) about radio.

No argument there, man. Opinions are opinions and everyone is entitled to one. Your WPNK model is not a bad idea. Heck, I think one of the unused frequencies like 94.5 or something should pick that up. That'd definitely find a spot on my radio.

The oldies format... this is what EVERYONE wants to return on 101.1 analog. Again, I have no problem with oldies. I have some oldies in my music library. The thing I think is the problem.. is that even IF WCBS returns as oldies to 101.1, it would be a carbon copy of what the current 101.1 WCBS-FM HD2 is. What people would want is their personalities. That would be hard to do considering many of the former WCBS-FM jocks have moved on to different venues (Cousin Brucie to Sirius, just to name one). So even IF the format was brought back, people would still be bickering.. because they don't have the personalities.

If HE gets the "JACK-off Award" as you soooo cleverly put it, then YOU just might qualify for the "TOOL of the week Award!" Go back to planning your "Punk" station that you KNOW WILL WORK in NYC and cut US a break. We ALL know that YOU HATE JACK!

I wouldn't say this thread is ruined. Temporarily interrupted, yes. There ARE moderators, posts CAN be deleted and people CAN be banned.

Let's just pick up the pieces and continue to move forward.
 
After reading the Jack Radio comments over the past few months on the New York reader board, I just wanted to say that the people of New York have the right to feel both proud and sad about losing their Oldies station WCBS last year. I am from Cleveland and worked as Norm N. Nites engineer from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame every Sunday evening during his "Heart of Rock and Roll" radio show. I can feel the hurt that the people of New York went thru during the lost of live programming. It not only effected a number of jocks, program directors, and others involved in New York, but a hand full of us here in Cleveland as well. The jocks that once graced over the airwaves in New York at WCBS 101.1 FM were your friends, they made us laugh, they took your calls, they listened to the listeners, and taught us so much about the history of the songs they were playing, what a bunch of legends that passed thru the doors of WCBS over the past 30 years. Working with a guy such as Norm N. Nite over the past two years before the switch was just awesome, it was the best board op job anyone could ever ask for, especially from the Alan Freed studios at the Rock Hall every Sunday Night. Norm taught me so much about every song, what was on the "B" side, who was in that certain group, when a certain person died, and what label that artist appeared on. Alot of our visitors came in from New York just to sit in on Norm's show, and it was a thrill just talking to them about New York. It was always a thrill when Sunday evening came around and now we all miss working for the old WCBS dearly. Anyway, we could only wish we had a great oldies stations to be proud of here in Cleveland with the great personalities that WCBS once had. I just wanted to tell the radio people of New York that I will never forget the great times I had being able to say "I engineered a great radio show with Norm Nite and it was heard all over New York right from the Rock Hall here in Cleveland", many thanks for the wonderful memories and may you all "Rock On" forever... P.S. My car is still proud to display both the old and new style WCBS bumper stickers here in Cleveland!!! A old WCBS Radio Friend "FREE AS THE AIR"

I'm not trying to "start" something with this thread. I just aired my opinion, got my post moved here, and people agreed with me. That's all.

Jack FM may not be your cup of tea.. but just because it isn't... DOESN'T make it a horrible format.

With all of the anti-Jack FM sentiment out there... and with it being so strong and prevalent, is it wrong at all to have A thread for the pro-Jack people?

If JACK had replaced WXRK-Rock after Stern's departure, the outrage would not be as nearly as great as it is now.

Oh... when I said "Let's pick up the pieces" I was referring to this thread itself.. lol

But i agree that yes, Jack would have been a much better fit as 92.3 Jack FM instead of 101.1 (not to mention 92.3 sounds better), and even though some of the playlists of Jack and WCBS oldies overlap, it would have worked a lot better. The younger demo who was on 92.3 would have probably stuck on to Jack a lot better. Most of my friends still think oldies is on 101.1... which proves that the younger demo has no real knowledge of "younger music on 101.1" unless they saw the Jack FM ads.

The younger people could have had 92.3 Jack FM and the oldies could have remained as 101.1 WCBS-FM. If Jack took over K-ROCK, the younger people would have acknowledged that flip a lot more than the way it really was done.
