Jack-fm

Seems like Jack is "playing what he wants" since the playlist doesn't look any different than before. Same 80's-heavy playlist with your 90's and 70's in there, with a touch of songs from the 2000s and today.
 
Hmmm...a quick look at other Jack stations around the country indicates that the phrase still is in use. Just maybe not at this station. Then again, this station has taken many liberties with the format.
 
Admittedly I think Dallas has one of the best Jack-FM stations in the country. Could be CBS might be adding jocks to the station or something along those lines.
 
Under the license from Sparknet, Jack stations in markets 50 and above have to run for one year jockless...and can program them their way with consulting from SparkNet...stations under 50 have to use the sat provided programming....
Jack in Dallas seems to be doing quite well with its setup....maybe they intend to add more local programming...but the playing what we want goes on..
 
I think I posted this previously but their new slogan seems to be "I love the 80's". You have to admit that this is a breath of fresh air when you have 93.3, 102.9, 103.7 and 106.1 playing the same &%#@ over and over 24 hours a day! And 102.1 is not "the cutting edge" anymore. Let's just put it with the rest of them.

Actually the playlist just keeps getting better! Tonight I heard Echo and the Bunnymen, The Alarm and Siouxsie and the Banshees. Also, they just played:

Do we know the other two? Other Adult Hits stations called "Bob" or other names do have DJs, for the most part. And most Jack stations in Canada have had DJs for a while.

But I am not aware of Jack stations in the U.S. with DJs. After all, wasn't the appeal of Jack that there were no DJs? Just Howard Cogan's quips and snide remarks.

And isn't it odd that Jack and other adult hits stations have been doing well in some U.S. markets. KBPA Austin is often #1. Yet many other markets, including NYC and Chicago, saw their Jack stations do poorly and switch format after a couple of years.

I've noticed on my RDS display in the car, "Playing What We Want" does come up whenever top of hour comes on or commercials. But during the top of hour ID, the actual Jack guy says "100.3 Jack FM, The 80's Live Here"
 
This is actually the best mix of all music I've seen them play! Even throwing Johnny Cash in there!

That really is some playlist. Who would have guessed all these different songs, from Kenny Loggins and Cyndi Lauper to Guns N Roses to Murray Head to Young MC, would work? At one time, we had to sit through songs we didn't like because there weren't that many choices on radio. Rock stations played Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, next to Carole King and Cat Stevens. We accepted that. Now either listeners want this diverse playlist or they're willing to sit through some songs they don't like for the songs they do.

Kinda reminds me of a playlist I still remember from 2009 (I remember it because I was home from college and traveling with my brother to a Rangers game and stuck in traffic on Hwy 360). Here is what I remember:

AC/DC - Back in Black
David Bowie - Let's Dance
Metallica - The Unforgiven
Patrick Hernandez - Born to Be Alive
Stone Temple Pilots - Plush

and another time I heard The Beach Boys' "Kokomo" followed by Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven." It was the most randomized playlist I have ever heard but it worked out very well.

2Pac-California Love played the other day, and then they went to Sweet Home Alabama, and then into Madonna's "Live To Tell"
 
These playlists are fairly similar to what I had going on my Live365 station, and BTW Live365 is coming back.
