Jack fm

How much longer do you think Jack fm will exist in places like Los Angeles, Dallas,Seattle, Nashville considering that the owners of those stations have to pay sparket communications to use that jack name

Some stations have dropped the Jack name (WJJK Indianapolis for one)

From 2003-09, 92.5 in Toronto was CJAQ-FM(92.5 Jack FM) in between their stints with top 40(CISS/92.5 Kiss FM from 1999-2003 and CKIS/Kiss 92.5 from 2009). And Buffalo's Jack FM, for a time, didn't use Howard Cogan as the voice of the station because he was doing the same honors for CJAQ

Actually, Rogers (Owner of 92.5 Toronto) made the grave mistake of keeping the Jack FM name when they went from Variety Hits to Rock. Average Joe listener thought they were just wanting to play rock and would play hit music or whatever when they want.
It was never taken seriously as a rock station. A joke indeed.
If they dropped Jack and went with Rock 92 or Bear FM or some animal they would have done well with it.

I am very glad to see that 92.9 is a lot smarter than Rogers was, understanding that keeping Jack with a format change does not work.
I just wish they could be an animal like a Hog or a Bear or something. That would have been amazing!

As for Jack vanishing, it depends on the need for an actual format change or just a slight tweaking in markets that still maintain the name and VH format.

Note, too, that Rogers STILL has quite a few stations that run the adult hits "Jack FM" format. They're in Calgary(ironically, with the CJAQ calls), Vancouver, Victoria BC, and a few other cities(London, Ont. is the closest one to Buffalo).

Not to spread any rumours, but Jack Vancouver just let their morning show go. It could mean a format change coming or just simply that they see better ratings with another option for mornings. Rogers in Ottawa/Smith Falls just got rid of their Jack FM.

Yep. They booted Jack off of 92.3 and moved country music to that frequency(which now puts it into competition with Bell's CKKL(Pure Country 94)...THEN started simulcasting CIWW's news format on the 101.1 frequency and calling the combined outlet CityNews Ottawa.

It may be that 92.3 is actually invisible in Ottawa, due to their weaker signal,
However, @ 101.1 FM (where Country was) the new Citynews FM may be a direct threat to News talker 580 CFRA.
Potentially, on one hand they did Country 94 a favour. On the other they are most likely attacking Ottawa's main news talker 580 CFRA. (Country 94 and 580 CFRA are both owned by Bell)

As for the new CityNews Ottawa...in the most recent Numeris ratings CIWW and CKBY COMBINED pulled a 5.7 share and a reach of about 90,000 listeners in the Ottawa-Gatineau market. CFRA? 8.4 share and a reach of 92,400 in the same market.

Sounds like ratings for Country 94 will go up but ratings for CFRA will go down.

As for the American Jacks that remain, I'm missing a lot of information...mainly what their best competition is.
There's an old saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"
Ottawa ended Bob FM mainly because Boom FM was playing similar music.
The American Jack FM's could easily do the same thing...vanish if there is another format worth picking up, rather than competing with a similar formatted station...(whatever those stations may be)

Picking up outside formats either costs money or inventory, and stations don't want to give up either one. Everybody has access to the same songs, nothing is exclusive, so just mix & match until you find the right combination.

At least when it comes to the major markets, Entercom's Jack stations in LA, DFW, and Minneapolis all do fairly well. I figure if they ever didn't want to keep paying the licensing for the Jack branding, they'd do what they did in Boston with Big 103.

Except that the Jack station in Buffalo is owned by Townsquare.

It also depends on whether or not if Entercom signed a contract for the rights, requiring them to keep the name Jack and NOT call it a Big or a Fickle until the contract is done. (contract also prevents someone else from using the Jack name)

In Vancouver it looks like the Jack FM name is sticking around.
They hired a new morning show: Drex assumes helm of Jack 96.9 Vancouver morning show - Broadcast Dialogue

Yes, it was. Now Entercom can put a Fickle in Buffalo to continue where Jack left off, if desire.

It's unlikely Entercom would spend money on the "Jack" signature from Sparknet. "Fickle" belongs to an Entercom competitor in Rochester; besides, it was a weak moniker. Mike, Bob, Zack, Mack, Stan or Tony might work just as well in Buffalo as Jack. The era of snarky liners is probably over too, although an occasional self-deprecating liner might work as long as it's humorous, ironic or local. Entercom doesn't strike me as being interested in doing a Jack-Bob-Mike on 107.7, so the discussion is moot.
