Jack FM's Magical Mystery Tour

Just like our friends at the new KFRC, our friend Jack here in NYC is also doing the "Magical Mystery Tour" in which all Memorial Day weekend, Jack is playing their entire music library from A to Z by title. As of this writing, they're playing "Always" by Bon Jovi.

Basically the same thing as KFRC's Mystery Tour -
MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR

To bring it all back, we're taking you on a Magical Mystery Tour through the KFRC classic hits music vault. The musical journey begins at A and takes you on an audio adventure through song titles all the way to Z. What will you discover? We think you'll find your lost radio station and a little of yourself along the way. Long Live Rock!

WOW! You mean they're not doing an Excellent 80's Weekend again? Stop the presses!

Interesting name. Is there some contest involved? Or is it simply the name of their A to Z weekend?

I'm sure listeners will enjoy some true variety this weekend on Jack FM.

I know, I'm a fan of the station and I'm surprised too :p All those 80's Weekends every weekend in April got tiring... I can stand the daily weekday "Excellent 80's Diner" from noon-1pm but those 80's WEEKENDS... *shudder*

Makes me appreciate the timeout known as "Acoustic Sunrise" even more ;)

There's no contest involved.. and it's just the name of the weekend. KFRC is using the same name for this weekend.. they're doing the same exact thing right now.

Glad to see Jack is doing something different. Their 2 year anniversary is coming up... 6/3.

Not to self-promote, but The Cockroach was the first station to regularly program a weekly "A to Z" playlist.

This weekend, if you only want to delve into one letter, join the Memorial Day Tea Party.

I'm listening to Jack and I heard a promo for the Magical Mystery Tour.. they say theres about 7,000 songs to play.

Um, HOLY $%^&!

This is gonna be goin for a looooooooong time. At least there's guaranteed to be no repeats and tons of variety.

That doesn't add up. Even assuming that each song is only 3 minutes long (which is a lowball estimate to be sure) and there are no commercials (not likely) it would take TWO WEEKS to go through all that.

Maybe they're using binary notation or something.

When WNEW did their "Rock from A to Z" in the summer of 1993, it took about a month.

Figure it took Jack one full day to get through A, B and C. It would figure they could possibly be done next weekend, even with their wide playlist.

Apparently, KFRC is doing a different Magical Mystery Tour, playing songs starting with the same letter per hour, but not in order.

And you wonder why they called it the Magical Mystery Tour - why not call it RadioA2Z? Was CBS about to until they saw The Cockroach had a show by the same name? Nah... But we are the first to play songs in order of title on a weekly basis, one letter per week.

Senate Bill 1353, we pray for you...

It took Jack until today to hit C. They started on Friday. Very good listen so far... I've heard songs I've never heard them play before! (and i'm a daily listener for at LEAST 5-6 hrs per day)

They're currently in the D's playing "Doctor My Eyes" by Jackson Browne.

I wonder how many hours it'll take Jack to get through the S's or the T's...

Oh, god... most likely a really good amount. Jack's first "D" song was Led Zeppelin's "D'yer Ma'ker" @ 4:36p followed by E.U.'s "Da Butt" @ 4:41p.

They're currently in the "Do"s with "Don't Bring Me Down" by Electric Light Orchestra. A little over 4 hours since they started the D's.. including commercial times.

The "C"s took a good while. The first "C" song was "C'Est La Vie" by Robbie Nevil @ 9:21a this morning. The last "C" song was "Cuts You Up" by Peter Murphy at 4:31p. That's about 7 hours, 10 mins just on the "C"s.

The "S" and "T" bunches are gonna take forever. It's gonna be one hell of a long set of songs.

When this is over is "Jack" commmmmmmmmmmming back? Or is it going to be Classic Hits?

I'd wager Jack... but maybe I'm biased because I'm pro-Jack (almost sounds like prozac).

Anywho, recently on the Jack site (I think in place for memorial weekend), they put up a restyled logo of Jack wearing a cook's apron saying "Jack lives here" on it. Also has the Jack FM logo which says "New York" under it.

Respectfully "DtotheJ" the first station to regularly promote A to Z was WFBQ, Indianapolis followed almost immediately by WRDU, Raleigh...in 1989. WNEW, as noted here, came a few years later. So if The Cockroach started before them can you tell us when?

Interestingly enough, it seems as though Jack FM is taking a break from the Magical Mystery Tour for their acoustic show.

Talk about a weekend of variety on Jack!

Joel Hollander never made an apology (as far as I know), the only "apology" was by 92.3's GM Tom Chiusano (done a couple of mins before the flip, obviously prerecorded).. and the apology even had a joking overtone to it.

If Joel made one, can someone direct me to it.. cuz that WOULD be a kick to hear.

Not gonna happen. He doesn't even work for CBS anymore. If CBS is smart they'll take out a restraining order keeping him at least a mile from the studios. ;)
