Jack Gone, Catfish Back

Are they doing classic country again or mainstream?

Nevermind...see it on your post now. :)

Mainstream. (Current Country)

R.D.P. <><

P.S. And yes we have way too many Country stations here.  Hope we don't get any new ones.  If we do, then I'll be very disappointed.

Anybody care to explain this decision? That makes three local, and five total Country Stations in Tuscaloosa... I know JACK wasn't doing well, but it would seem like there's a better destination than another Country.
WTXT - 98.1
WFFN - 95.3
WZZK - 104.7
WDXB - 102.5
WNPT - 102.9

Makes no sense to me either.

P.S. And yes I can get many Country stations from my hometown, Montgomery, Birmingham, Demopolis, Thomasville and Tuscaloosa (All three of yours)

B.T.W. Glad the ALEX FM Selma and The Peach Clanton are sticking with Classic Hits. Hope they'll keep it that way for a long time to come.

*groan*

I'm no fan of country and no fan of having the same format on a bajillion (sorry for the technical term) signals.

Unless they plan to sell directly to Marion/Demopolis I don't see this making much headway against the local signals in Tuscaloosa or Selma or Bibb County.

Well, it is Alabama. What do you expect to hear on the radio? Don't like country, move to New York City! I bet radio sucks up there too.

Yes it does and I know that from first hand listening. ;)

As for country, there's only so much ad money to go around. Birmingham is a big market and their third tier country station finally dried up and went sports. WNPT is definitely third tier in Tuscaloosa simply because of the weaker signal. They could go after the niche-r formats that the moneymakers ignore. Since urban got snapped up by Apex/Cox, there are some possibilities for the area. FM gospel (country or black) are not routinely heard there and I think 104.3 from Eutaw could be edged to the bottom by stealing their format. It would be a big hit to 790 WTSK who consistently shows high in the ratings as the only gospel station in town.

Depending on who is screwing around with WVUA-FM the city might could support an edgy alternative rock station since ZBQ is more Hot AC and The Vulcan translator doesn't reach the area. I've had a notion that CC is planning something on a translator, using WACT as a feeder for a niche product like they've done in B'ham. Stealing their thunder would certainly put a crimp in someone's plans there.

Heck, I am not sure there's any classic country on in Tuscaloosa; that would be a good compliment to TXT and WIN 98.

I think, marketed properly, they could do a "Sunny" type AC and sap off some listeners from Magic and The River (translator). Maybe even ZBQ, too.

Anything else you guys can come up with?

Suggestion Number 1:

Go Contemporary Christian. I say that because this area doesn't have CCM on the radio. Doing a CCM presentation would work out, if programmed right and it was live and local. With my vast knowledge of this format, I could help them put this station together and we could turn this station into a real goldmine for West Central Alabama.

Suggestion Number 2:

If number 1 were be shot down and the owner(s) didn't think that idea would pan out, then fill in another format hole and go Mainstream Rock to compensate the loss of WRTR's former format. When that station went talk, they opened up a format hole, that is begging for someone to fill in and run with. If WNPT were smart and wise they would go for this idea and do it. This format would be a goldmine for them as well.

It's not commercial, but I think Moody Radio South is in Tuscaloosa doing something of a CCM format.

As far as Sunny/AC would go, the River is owned by the same group as WNPT I believe. Granted, the bigger signal would have to be better than the translator.

Amen to that one!

We don't need anymore Country on the radio.

Have too much of it now.

P.S. And yes I just counted them up.  We can get around 11 Country stations here in my hometown.  Here's a listing of them all: 92.3 from Montgomery, 94.3 from Greenville, 95.3 from T-Town, 95.5 from Thomasville, 98.1 from T-Town, 98.5 from Demopolis, 98.9 from Montgomery, 100.1 from here in Selma, 102.5 from Birmingham, 102.9 from T-Town and 104.7 from Birmingham. I believe that's way too many for one area to have.

B.T.W. When WVLV 106.3 FM Maplesville signs on, then we'll have 12 to chose from.  I Hope Valleydale will do something more along the lines of Classic Country and not try to be like everyone else.  If they go the modern route, then that would be a big let down.  I'll be rooting for this new station to go Classic Country too Mr. Tallred.  We need something different on the radio dial here. Too much of one thing can and will lead to overkill.

Yeah, I believe Classic Country would be a good fit for that area on 106.3 or 102.9... Since 102.9 went Country, I think Southern Gospel or CCM would be a good fit. Even a satellite feed from K-Love, WAY-FM, or Salem media would gain some listeners. In Auburn our CCM station, Praise 88.7 WELL, is mostly satellite fed from SRN and is a fairly popular station in the area. Even though I am a Country music fan, even I can acknowledge THAT many stations in one area is too many Country music stations lol.......

Please, no more "satellite feeds" and syndicated time fillers. We aren't in Kansas anymore, Toto.

Certainly we have more than enough options for a country format. Its an easy sale to the advertiser, which is why it's plentiful, and boring.
