JACK in JACKson?

Rumor is the JACK format is coming to Jackson, TN. WYNU is changing it's calls to WJKT,dumping John Boy and Billy and flipping to the JACK format by fall. This is probably a good idea considering the station's abysmial ratings.

Well, being since the "Memphis" heading says "about memphis and West Tennessee" last I checked that's where jackson was...anyway... Jack may be a good thing, Jack may be a bad thing... I don't really know...but I do Know that Rock 92.3 is still number 1 total survey area... ask any factory worker (outside of Memphis) what they listen too... odds are three out of five will say "Power 92" honestly I would like to see a return to "power" I don't know what the plans are... I heard rumors of "Jack in Jackson" when it was still Clear Channel... so who knows...but the station does alot better than most people believe.. and it has the most street credit in rural west tennessee... (i hope they keep the jocks what ever happens... esp. that awesome night jock J-rod ;) )

WYNU has the biggest tower and the strongest signal of any radio station in West Tennessee (outside of FM100 in Memphis). It could broadcast test tones and still do well in the total survey area. The station is not as good as it was back in it's 90's heyday. But right now it is the best sounding station in the FOREVER cluster. (that's not saying much)

And the exodus from FOREVER continues...my sources say that two more people have exited from WYNU/WTNV/WTJS this week. This brings the grand total to 7 people leaving within a month. 3 air talents, 2 salespeople, 1 engineer, 1 business manager. What do these people know that others don't?

I guess they know that with WYNU turning to Jack there would be no need for any jocks and I still can't imagine Conrad Delaney changing his name to some amphibian type name when they change over to Froggy!

Like I said before, seems strange that 92 is flipping to "Jack" when I just put away a big ole shipment of "Rock 92.3" T-shirts. I mean enough to last us a while! Also, incase you guys HAVEN'T heard, they're hiring!Business manager is old news, the engineer is STILL here. Oh and Conrad still has a job as long as he wants to work or is in good enough health to work. You guys need to stop listen to "rumor mill" and just give me a call. I can save you the embarrassment of being WRONG so often on the boards. LOL

I got a couple of folks I know that are looking that I would like to send your way, if you've got the openings. Who should they contact? Can they email a package?

I'm sure that a box of t-shirts will keep a station from changing format! I guess the next excuse will be "But we just got a box of new ink pens with our logo on it. Therefore, they'll never change the format." I think that these decisions may be bigger than a "big ole box of t-shirts."

You're right. What do I know?! I just work here. You know as the Program Director and all. And did I say one box? I said "shipment". Either way. Makes no difference to me. I have a job and it's being a very lucrative one and one I enjoy to boot! So you guys sit over there a stew up some more cartoons. I have work to do. ;D

It doesn't really matter what happens with WYNU or WTNV. Thomas Media is the dominant player in the market in both ratings and revenue and they will continue to be. They keep hiring the good people away from Forever. The on air quality of the Thomas cluster continues to improve while Forever's WTNV now sounds amateurish and WTJS is unlistenable due to an ungodly amount of techincal mistakes. Changing WTNV to FROGGY is actually a smart move. That cartoonish image will match the sound. The best the Forever folks can hope for is a distant second in the Jackson market. (Unless the rumors about Citadel coming into the market are true...???)

Dude, I heard that rumor too. I heard a radio group was looking at buying WMXX, WNWS and some station out of Milan (I think).I don't think it's true though. The Jackson market can't support 3 clusters.

Those are the same stations I heard were going to be part of the new cluster except my "kingly' source said it was a Trenton station, not Milan and that WDXI AM was also part of the possible deal.

I hope that no one screws around with WMXX. I've listened to it for several years. It has more vairety (larger and more inclusive playlist) of music than most Oldies stations. Radio companies can make some pretty bonehead moves though...

Can anyone summarize "Froggy's" life in Memphis? I heard that it didn't do too well. How long did it last? Did it have any success?
Well, Graceland...94.1, a station that had very recently upgraded to a C2 from a Class A, flipped to its Frog format in February, 1993. As Frgg stations go, it was pretty typical: Froggy names, the same logo all frog stations used (based on the face of former Keymarket guy, Marshall Magee). The station did pretty well at first. Kix had been flying quite high just prior to the flip, getting well into double digits 12+. Froggy hurt them – badly. In essence, the stations just bloodied each other for the coming years. Froggy never beat them, but they came close a book or two.Eventually, Kix, which frankly had been a lukewarm station, began to get its act together. As PD Bill Jones left, the station improved itself with subsequent folks to sit in the chair. As Kix improved, Froggy began to fatigue. Its lack of imagination and, some say, signal trouble became issues. Kix took off, and Froggy simply couldn’t keep up. But, it was bound to happen.Froggy stayed in the format a bit too long, really. Much like the current format on the frequency, the air was out of the tires long before the flip. Finally, mercifully, the format changed again in early 2001. And, it’s still there today.Oh, and with a name like "Graceland," are you one of the Sirius "Elvis Radio" people?DE

The Froggy format is a novelty that usually wears out it's welcome within a couple of years. The whole idea is to have "cute" air names and imaging to detract from the fact that the air talent is usually less than stellar. (already happening at WTNV) Most of the Froggy stations are staffed with part-time level talent making little money which leads to high turnover. Froggy is a kiddie concept that is 15 years behind the times. Play the hits, hire real talent and brand your station with cool imaging and you can easily defeat a Froggy station (are you listening Thomas Media?)The markets that Froggy's work in usually do not have much competition. The Froggy I worked at in another state had no competition and so of course it did well. Does this mean it was a good station? Absolutely not. I'm glad to be gone from there.

Six years ago I remember hearing about how the Jackson market would be ruined by Thomas Media coming to town. All they did was raise the bar on the level of quality in the market. I think more competition makes everyone "up" their performance level. Eventually FOREVER will be a major player in the market. {Although their impact may not be felt as quickly or as strongly as when Thomas Media hit the marketplace back in 2000 but that's only because they don't have the same programming genius in the Ops position as Thomas Media did. Whatever happened to that guy? I can't even remember his name... I keed :)}By the way, congrats Gregg Rivers on being named program director. You still owe me some Starbucks coffee.
