I admit I was excited when WCBS 101.1 changed their format after over 30 years of playing oldies. I was excited to hear a station that played 80s music. But that music no longer seems so great. Maybe it's all the hard rock they play. But it's mostly that annoying jerk in the voice-overs.
I may like some of the music on the new 101.1 Jack FM but more and more I realize what happened last Friday was totally unethical and nasty. You don't take a station that has had a format of oldies for over 30 years with long time personalities such as "Cousin Brucie" and just throw them out on the street with less than an hours notice. And this whole "Jack" concept is very arrogant. The voice-overs are even taking phone calls of angry listeners and making fun of them on the air. This is a station, and a company (Infinity) that has no respect for it's employees and the public. I just can't listen to a station that treats people like that.
The yuppies at Infinity don't care about older people. This seems to be the way the whole NYC market is going. There isn't a station left that will play Barry Manilow or the Carpenters. Instead Infinity alienated almost all of the CBS 101.1 listeners. The station wasn't doing as badly as Mix 102.7. If Infinity wanted Jack so bad they should have brought him to 102.7, which is a station that continues to sound like a cheap KTU knock-off and suffers in the ratings.
As for 101.1, if they wanted to change the format they should have kept the DJs and changed it to a Lite AC format like "Sunny" or "The Breeze". This format plays alot oldies but some newer stuff and has a fairly deep playlist. God knows NYC needs a soft station. Lite FM sounds like Hot AC compared to most other AC's.
You'd think someone would challange Lite-FM. The only reason why 106.7 does so well is they're the only game in town. I really don't see anything that great about that station. It's gotten way too hot over the years. A soft AC that bases it's playlist on oldies would work. Hopefully someone else in the NYC market will pull up to the plate with such a format, but don't count on it.
