Jack jocks? HD-FM jocks?

would adding jocks at JACK help their ratings? Or, is the problem the music? any idea when jocks could be added to HD-FM channels? in one year? two years? or longer?

It could help the ratings, but it's all about the music. The music has to be right. It doesn't sound like a NY station. It needs to play the right mix to suceed. They play way too much Rock.

Jocks vs. jockless radio? Jocks would tend to help not hinder any format because it's "radio"... Not your IpoD on "Insult"!!! However...it's all about the money! "How many nickels more do you think we can squeeze out of this dime ...Les?" All the "Infantessimally-run-Infinity" now cloaked as CBS stations have the lower rated Jacks (Except maybe LA)...and all the other non-CBS owned/run Jacks/Clones seem to do better. Why? CBS's refusal to part with another one of Les's nickels! And forget HD! The FCC agreement is that they all must stay commercial free for the first 2-3 years...and we all should by now know that they are owned and run by the same company's and mentality that brought us Jack! It's SUCKS...but that is the reality of the future of all radio...by air over land or by bird thru space. You can thank our politicians...especially the one(s) in bed with Mr. Mays!

Is it actually an FCC agreement? I was under the impression from reading other sources that it's an "informal" agreement between major broadcasters to keep HD Radio commercial free for a couple of years. As far as Jack FM, adding jocks could improve ratings a bit, but the tradeoff might actually be worse off for the station if ratings/revenues don't go up, since adding jocks, traffic, a morning show, etc., would cut into the station's revenues. If they were somehow able to find a music mix that works, ratings-wise, and combine that with jocks, then they might see better days. They could always shoot for being another PLJ-type station...mediocre ratings, amazing revenues.

[You hit the nail on the head TD, especially regarding Jack stations (with a few exceptions) wallowing in mediocrity, as is Jack/WBUF in Buffalo (my usual posting place) and Toronto. Jocks certainly would make the format more personal, relatable, entertaining and arguably, more highly rated. Here's the rub. CBS cannot out-duel MY iPod with Jack, so they should stop trying. And Jack stations are no substitute for those who've not yet purchased iPods. That's what the preset buttons and scan on the radio are used for. Eventually, Joel and Les will come to understand these immutable truths... perhaps after they've lost a few more hundred million. One more thing: You coined an appropriate and fitting phrase with "iPod On Insult." Priceless! As a student of the written word, I tip my Buffalo Sabres cap to you.[/Mike]

Let me ask what seems like an obvious question to me. Why not get with Apple Computer and other online music downlaod places and see what people are downloading and then program the music to that -- category specific of course?
