Jack Kemp

I always said Jack would have made a great radio talk show host - and a breath of fresh air to what we're used to hearing these days. A very polite guy, a class act.

Anyone remember the Marine Trust Bank TV ads he did during his glory years with The Bills in the mid 60s? He also was a color analyst as the "AFL guy" for one of the early Super Bowls(I think Super Bowl 2).

I don't remember the ads you're referring to but you're absolutely right, Jack Kemp would've made an outstanding radio talk show host. He may have differed with some but he showed respect for all.

Thanks for that reminder. After 40+ years, I forgot he did indeed have a part in the Super Bowl.

I believe it was Super Bowl I. Both NBC (AFL) and CBS (NFL) broadcast the game.

I think he was an analyst for CBS, lending his thoughts about the Chiefs (something the CBS crew knew little about..)

As an AFL guy I was torn between which coverage to watch, the NBC telecast with Curt Gowdy and Paul Christman (announcers I watched every week), or the CBS telecast (only because they had Jack Kemp).

Certainly he would have been an EXCELLENT radio host. Insightful, knowledgeable, and opinionated. We'll all miss "Jackie".

Sort of like what Bill Bennett is doing on mornings - he does a very interesting show, although a lot of radio listeners are still unaware of his existence.

Surprised we never heard anything in the trades about an offer of a national radio gig, since Jack Kemp was certainly articulate, knowledgeable, honest and outspoken--would have done a compelling show, even if you didn't agree with him. (Maybe someone did make an offer and he just wasn't interested--by the time he was out of competitive politics at the end of the 1996 race, most talk radio had already gone beyond the kind of civil, informed discourse he liked.) I never met anyone, in any party, who didn't think the world of him as a man, whatever they may have thought of the issue positions he took. He had to be one of the most sincere, forthright men of his generation in public life.

He also was a terrific interview. I wish I had a dollar for each time I interviewed him while working for KB or WBEN, he was always quotable and always had something on-point to say about the big national issues of the day. Had him a couple of times as a phone guest on my Rochester show in the early 90s as well, after he'd left the Cabinet and before he ran with Dole...wish I could find the tapes of those shows, they'd be interesting listening for his take on issues we're still dealing with now.
