Jack LaLanne

I will admit I had never heard of this guy really until I saw one of his Power Juicer infomercials. His nationally-syndicated exercise show lasted from 1951 to 1985, anyone ever watch it? Anyways he just turned 95 years old a couple days ago and still alive and kicking selling his latest book and power juicers! :D

Yes, I did watch it, and it ran very early in the morning. I want to say WGN carried it in Chicago, but someone correct me if they know better.
I guess you can't fault him or his methods much if he's made it to 95.
It's pretty hard to tell a 95 year old they're wrong about healthy living.

My best friend from years back....his grandma is now 109, and finally leaving the family home to be in a more "medical environment".
She's the perfect picture of "hard work won't kill ya, that's what keeps you going."

Along with his exercise regimen, LaLanne attributes his healthy longevity to his diet -- he is a vegetarian and eats primarily raw, whole, uncooked vegetables and grains. He used to be quoted as saying his best piece of advice about eating was, "If it tastes good, spit it out." He views food as fuel, period, with no regard for taste, pleasure, or aesthetics. Now if that floats his boat, fine and dandy, but personally, I'd rather live to be 65 eating the foods that I enjoy than live to 95 denying myself and forcing roots, berries, and alfalfa down my gut. But that's just me... <s>

Jack LaLanne was on about 9 at WGN. They also had Paul Fogarty (with organ music to accompany him) and Ed Allen exercising shows over the years - and the lady (name forgotten).

I can recall watching it as a little kid on WPIX in NY during the early '70s. This wasn't the earlier videotaped version that ESPN Classic used to air, BTW, but the later filmed edition. I think the only prop that he used was a chair. :)

I hope LaLanne didn't say that. If he did, it was a stupid thing to say. Most vegetables, fruits and grains taste good..though some are a little tough to choke down unless they're cooked, which does destroy a small percentage of the nutrients, but not all, by any means.

If you eat primarily a healthy diet, but cook your food, and don't eat food that's "bad" for you. often, you'll live a long life. Nobody's going to shorten their life if they eat one cheeseburger a month, or a piece of pastry occasionally.

Longevity is also partly genetic. A couple of years ago, I read the obituary for LaLanne's older brother. He lived into his early or mid 90s, too. He probably also had good personal habits, but he wasn't the true believer that Jack is.

I remember his show all throughout the 60s - it was filmed in San Francisco, where Jack has lived most of his life, and syndicated to most major markets...usually ran early on weekday mornings.

Was that Debbie Drake?

Is it just me or does he come off as being little too pompous and self-righteous? I was reading an interview he did five years ago with him and his wife and he sounded just that. More power to him for being still in great shape at 95 but he seems to belittle people alot. Plus he says he's a believer in the twinkie defense. I guess George Burns' habits at 95 makes him cringe. :D

I cam remember watching him before I was even in grade school, he was on first followed by Cap't Kangaroo at least In Saint Petersburg where I was growing up

I think Ol' Jack has always been a bit frustrated that everybody doesn't want to be just like him. In reality, his lifestyle of discipline and self-denial is not that appealing to most, regardless of the health benefits. Plus, while his diet and exercise regimen certainly has contributed to his longevity, the fact is that no one lives to be 95 in reasonably good shape unless they've got good genetics to begin with -- I think he honestly believes everyone could live as long and healthy as he has if they would just listen to him. So, yeah, there's probably a bit of arrogance there.

In my nursing home chaplain job, I must work around LOTS of staff people (mostly young women) some who are dieticians (some not) who are REALLY hung up on fitness... and think someone, who is even average build is FAT. They are obsessed with that idea and laugh at people who are even moderately overweight..

They also seem to have an attitude that MOST PEOPLE are idiots and THEY have ALL the right answers. I find it very common here, and very annoying. I know this is a great genealization, but it's easy to see this where I work.

Jack has a big head because he is a success and proves it with every breath he takes from his 95 year old lungs. I don't have to be near him, so more power to him.

I remember that time -- it was soon after WFTS signed on in 1982; they carried Jack at 8:30AM, followed by the Captain at 9AM, delayed from CBS's 6:30AM feed (which was bumped by WTVT, due to their local "Breakfast Beat" show).

I remember both versions of the show in the 60s...the first batch in black and white on videotape and the late 60s vesion on film in color.

Always wondered who that organist behind the camera was...he sounded like the organist on The Howdy Doody Show in the mid 50s.

Also remembered his german shepherd dog named "Happy" and those dry on-air jokes Jack shared with his viewers whom he always referred to as his students.

Jack is more than a fitness guru. He's a positive thinker and a man of faith...somehow I didn't mind his closing song he sang which he sung to the tune of Elvis' "It's Now Or Never."

He's been around longer than Debbie Drake,Exercise With Gloria and Richard Simmons. My mother watched him and exercised with him too.

i met him about 4 or 5 years ago, he was short around 5 ft 6 and seemed frail, lets put it this way he looked like a normal guy in his 90's.
but a very nice guy. i also met richard simmons a few years ago, question? shouldn't a guy like simmons who has been working out for years and years-look in better shape than he does?
