Jack, Mix, and the Rock

I was reading the thread about Jack's subtle and website and there was a small discussion about Jack, Mix, and the Rock. I do not live in this area, so I have a question. Do you think Jack will hurt the Rock? Do you think Mix will bounce back up?
______________

1) Yes, but only temporarily, within a book or two the Rock will have back whatever listeners it may loose to Jack. Jack has no staying power.
2}Yes, Mix will be back on top again. Mix will remain near the top until it is challanged by a station with a similar format. remember when 92Q was always at the top because it was the only Urban station in town.

And how do you know this? Do you have a time machine? I completely disagree.

RM: I'm with you on disagreeing with the previous Jack conclusions...
You're right on the money, again.

First, you have to look at the last book and realize that The Rock
had an exceptionally high trend and Mix had an exceptionally low
trend, which sort of balances things out before the real Jack
attack has been felt. It all depends on the continued direction
of the the newest staff addition (Moose) at Jack as to what will
(long-term) happen to Jack's music. I'd just suggest you would
be 99% correct that Jack goes more Classic rock and less Madonna.
In fact, as I've said, Jack can position itself totally away
from Mix and listeners won't even notice the difference since
Jack is "so unpredictable." This sounds weird and simplistic, but in the 25-54
numbers, look for Mix, Rock and Jack to shuffle for the top
spots and the numbers of Rock and Mix won't drop any more
down than Jack goes up (+/- 1 to 1.5 shares.) making it
a virtual three way tie. SCC wins on all sides.
CC doesn't feel threatened enough to revamp the Rock and they
focus on gaining The Beat to #1 while refocusing the River to
not take away from The Beat. You have a lot of stations going
for #1, but no one can really run away with it. Unless one Country drops
away, which won't happen. I am sure CR can
add his perspective from CC. If these variables stay in place
for a while, CC and SCC can focus on the top 5, while Cumulus
stays mostly steady with 97.1, 99.7 and The Fan (which is the
biggest joke ever in Nashville FM radio history.) Meanwhile
Citadel and Cromwell do nothing exciting or different.

The comment that Jack has no staying power is total bs. This
format is the hottest thing to hit radio in years.

And, regardless of ratings, have you all noticed all of the businesses,
listening to Jack? People sure are talking about Jack. I can't say anything in Nashville has had people talking like this since KDF wasted away into redneckritaville. Sorry, had to bring that up again, didn't I?

Okay, that's my unobjective two cents worth. Time for vacation.
Maybe I'll figure out what's really going to happen in Nashville
radio while away from it.

Moose is now with SCC as imaging and music director. He has some
decision making abilities at the local level. I have to agree
the Pointer Sisters don't mix with Zeppelin... As for hitting
walls, I think the overall verdict is out on that, cause it's
still to new in America. The really weird question is "can
Jack be flexible enough to not bore people with the same 1200
songs? And how long can people really put up with train wreck
music mixes? It's a novelty that might wear thin.

The Jack format does appear to peak and then slide after about 10-12 months. It's happening in Dallas.

The novelty of train wrecks must wear off after a while. Does Jack in Dallas have any jocks?

No jocks yet. The "Jack" format HAS to hire jocks. The problem in Dallas is that Infinity has made it impossible for the first airstaff they hire. They've been running anti-jock liners for over a year now. When that first airstaff goes live they'll be hated. Jack in Dallas sounds tired, flat and out of touch with North Texas and the #'s are starting to reflect that "corporate" sound. After nearly 25 years in this business I never thought I'd say this but, Radio is a sad business these days. Listener #'s are down, revenue is down, even the P1's don't trust their favorite station anymore. Having said that, I still love this business! I just feel like I'm standing in the courtyard with the walls tumbling all around me trying to defend something I don't understand anymore. One of these days I'll get a real job, until then I hope I can fend off the evil empire with the few rubber bullets I have left.

I've heard it's happening in Jackson, MS, too.

The only jack I know in the US that has even a partial air staff is the one in Kansas city. They from what I've heard by listening to them is a morning person who is basicly there for news and local information. They also have some one on in the afternoon. They also have traffic reportws.

I have found that jack in its own way is honest radio. What I mean is that I've looked at a few jack web sites (Infinity and those owned by other companies.) I've found that if they are going to have an air staff or already have one it is mentioned on the site.

I've heard the jack in Dallas online and have heard the promos on the web site for New York's jack WCBS FM. They don't use any of what I call the co-op promos. Infinity's promos are different. New York's promos are probably a little too in your face considering how many people they tickedd off bby flipping the oldies station to jack in the first place. The ones for Dallas I found borring. They are also "the new 100.3 jack fm."

I'm pretty sure the Denver Jack, KJAC

has jocks and local contests and staff goes out into the community. Doug "NashRadio"

If they do, they have just added them in the past several months. I have been to Denver several times since the end of last year, with the last trip being in June, and KJAC did not have any air personalities or running any local at that time.

I listened to Denver's jack this afternoon. I was listening shortly after 5 our time which is 4 their time. They had some one on the air. He (I think his name was Cliften) came on at the end of the music set. He said something like Phil Collins the name of the artist of the song ending. Then he went on to say and before that naming the song before that going through the set of music just played. Then he said something about the traffic. He talked about a power outage at some intersection. After the next set of songs he did about the same except he didn't talk about the traffic he gave the weather forcast and told the curren temperature.

It reminded me of the old AOR format or the classic rock format 104.5 was doing in 87 and 88. He didn't talk over the music at any time except that the song may be faiding out while he was talking.

I listened to Denver's Jack for a couple of hours today through their website. First time I had listened to them a couple of months. They had a female jock on during morning drive time but no air personalities at all during mid-days. It could be they are using jocks during morning and afternoon drive only and using the standard Jack format with the voice tracking the rest of the time.

JACK sounding more like JILL?

Seems to me that Jack is sounding more like Jill. I liked Jack early (male listener), but in the last week or more, it seems Jack is sounding more soft and more female oriented.

Anyone agree? I'm finding myself not liking Jack nearly as much or staying with the station.

At first I could hold through a softer song and be rewarded with something good on the other side for a few songs. Now it seems that the softer music is coming more frequently and even back to back.
______________

And Denver, where no TV apparently = a down month. And the "flow"
is said to have been less train-wreck oriented lately. If they
try to go for TSL than doesn't that derail the whole JACK persona?
