Jack O. Lantern,Ed Lincoln

How about top40 jocks Jack O. Lantern(WHYL) and Ed Lincoln(WSBA) -- Harrisburg,Pa. --1960's? Anyone know what happened to them? I've been out of Pa. for many years and out of radio. Recently moved back to my native Pa.

Clayton: I'm not absolutely certain but I seem to recall that Jack O. Lantern (his real name!) passed away a few years ago. Ed Lincoln is also no longer with us, having gone to the big record hop about 3 or 4 years ago. (I'm not saying that to be smug; Ed was known far and wide for his record hops and was still doing them until the day he retired, and probably later, such was his popularity.) When I jocked at WSBA in the 80s, I followed Ed and his Hall of Fame show every night for five years. He was truly Mr. Show Biz and had led the classic disc jockey life, although he mellowed a bit in later years. I listened to Ed when I was about 10 years old, then later got to work with him. What a trip! Ed succumbed to Parkinsons Disease and Alzheimer's, sorry to say.

I'll also take a stab at your WFEC "Good Guys" question below when I have a little more time.

John Summers

If Jack has not passed on your report of his death will be premature John! I'm sure Jack will understand! I've been away so long that I just heard Ron Drake had passed on. Ron Drake (WHP), likely the best known radio guy in central Pa. history. although I suppose Bruce Bond would disagree! on the internet-- I located info on Lucky Pierre Gonneau former WFEC jock. seems he's been in LA for years as a jock, record co.owner/producer, agent for bands/artists, and actor. His french accent on top40 WFEC was VERY funny! Met him a few times. Nice guy. Let me know if you recall any info on Jim,Dave, Tony of WFEC. Used to know all of them.

Ed Lincoln is one of the nicest people i have ever met. i worked at a Bookland store in the early 80's in York, and he would come in every day to play the lottery and shoot the bull with us for a half-hour or so. i miss him alot. will never be a collection of jocks like the ones WSBA had in the 70's and 80's

Re: Jack O. Lantern of late sixties WHYL/Carlisle fame. Real name, James Frank. In 1971 Jack O. became GM (and partner?) of a company called Raystay owned principally by Carlisle cable pioneer George Gardner and they put a new AM on the air in Waynesboro, PA--1130/WEEO. WEEO was the first Top 40 station in the Hagerstown-Chambersburg market and was a big hit. In 1973 Raystay purchased an existing AM in Toledo, Ohio, 1520/WTTO and Jack became GM of that property. It was a small signal is a large metro area and was not a hit. I had worked for Jack in both Waynesboro and Toledo, but returned to PA in late 1974. Sometime in the mid-seventies Jack left the radio business but stayed in the Toledo area, forming a construction company in Bowling Green, Ohio. That's when I lost track of him.

Jack was a true piece of work--a jock who rode the wave of Top 40 radio to a level of success that might have been beyond his capability. You know--"Peter Principle" stuff. Very energetic and a real risk taker. To his credit, he was always good to me and helped get me started on a career that's lasted 40 years, so far.

Speaking of WSBA, how about news anchors, Ed Wickenheiser, Leonard Roberts, Bob Shipley, morning guy Hal Raymond, Ron Chubb and any of the great 70's and 80's jocks from "The Mighty 9-10"?

Leonard Roberts did the news at WBAL in Baltimore and weekends at WGTY in Gettysburg. I don't know if he is still there.

Ed Wickenheiser left WSBA to become News Director of WGAL-TV, a position which he held until his retirement. He's well and always attends the Channel 8 staff Christmas party and other functions to which the old guard is invited.

Hal Raymond passed away a few years ago; Bob Shipley just recently. Check the Central PA board for a discussion about Bob.

Leonard is still with WBAL at last report. Ron Chubb went into sales at WSBA but I don't know what he may be doing now.
