Jack Popejoy

Too bad. Amazing how those voices we're so accustomed to hearing just slip away in the night. RIP

'Shocked' is the word – I can’t believe Jack passed on. I heard him on KNX just two weeks ago, his voice was hoarse though. I thought he was off the last 14 days to beat ‘the flu’ – I was wrong. I will miss his Earthquake reports. L.A. Radio has lost someone very unique. What A Shock. :'( JG

I had forgotten that Jack Popejoy was a news anchor for awhile at KSAN, toward the end of the progressive rock era, when it was KMET's sister station. Apparently, he also anchored at the Bay Area's TV20. The owner, James Gabbert - had been in a station owner in radio, and liked to use radio people. Robert McCormick was another of his anchors.

Dammit, come back, Jack.

I remember watching Jack do the news breaks on KTZO, Jim Gabbert's TV20 in San Francisco in the early 80s. Jack later told me he was the "token straight man" there. As always, that was Jack's subtle sense of humor.

Jack was easy to work with when I was at KFWB with him. Unlike some of the other "stars" at News 98, Jack was always just a good guy doing his job, and doing it damned well.

He could take that USGS tech talk about quakes and make us rubes understand it. And yes Jack, I will ALWAYS remember that we don't say "Richter Scale" on the air. Never ever.

Thanks for being here Jack. You made it a better place.

Wow, I haven't listening to KNX in the mornings for awhile but I used to hear him along with Dick and Vicky. Great morning crew. Can't believe it and RIP Mr. Popejoy

Today on LARadio.com, Don Barrett wrote a lengthy essay about the state of Los Angeles radio. He did not include any news items or the Rewind feature. The above comments prove that Jack Popejoy had many admirers. Here is today's Rewind:

LARadio Rewind: February 5, 2011. Longtime KFWB/KNX morning news anchor and earthquake expert Jack Popejoy dies of cancer at his home in Sherman Oaks. He was 63. Born in Austin, Popejoy majored in astronomy at Amherst College and managed campus station WAMH. He later worked at WMEX in Boston and WPEN in Philadelphia. In 1972 he briefly served as program director of KGOE before coming to KIIS as a weekend dj and newscaster. He eventually became KIIS program director. In 1976 Popejoy joined the news staff at KPOL/am-fm. Two years later, as program direcor of KPOL/fm, he changed the call letters to KZLA. Popejoy worked for a short time at KLOS before moving to San Francisco, where he did news for KSAN and KZTO-Channel 20. In 1983 he began doing fill-in on KCOP-Channel 13 newscasts. Popejoy joined KFWB in 1986 and became morning news anchor in 2000. In 2009 he moved to KNX, where he co-anchored the morning news and co-hosted the Saturday-afternoon "Tech News" program. Popejoy, an avid world traveler who had visited all seven continents, won eight Press Club awards and 27 Golden Mike awards.
