"Jack" Radio Coming Shortly...

On the heels of NYC and Chicago dumping their oldies stations to jump on the "Jack" format before someone else does ... which New Orleans ownership has *already* decided to dump their current Top-10 format to grab "Jack" very quickly before the other cluster grabs it? ...

Surprises coming in the next few days...

Bayou 105.3?

Well we know it isn't WDVW(Diva 92.3) or KSTE(104.1KISS-FM) since both are not in the top 10. But one can suspect if "JACK" arrives in the Big Easy someone else will fill the former station's format void.

if it is oldies 95.7 , WTIX already has oldies covered.

I only have 2 guesses. Either Kool 95.7 is gonna get a little "Fickle", or WRNO will be "My 99.5" from now on.

If it's 95.7, that gives Costello control of oldies radio in New Orleans... ewww. While I'm a fan of New Orleans heritage and oldies, Costello's attempt is so half-assed it's not funny. Maybe it's even quarter-assed?
______________

Yes, and they do a helluvah better job than 95.7 any day.

Yeah but is that Top 10 in ratings or format? (as some stations have a habit of retreading the same stuff over and over)

The one I would vote for would have been at number 12 (considering it's recent sale to the Dowdy's) but top 10 in ratings..hum

Actually another would have been KSTE (Kiss 104) that basically plays the same 10 songs it seems like anymore... Plus they tried the classic hits format (that bombed on them) besides, haven't heard any new PD/MDs taking over for annette just yet... So I wonder if this one is in back burner status till a new format hits?

Bayou 105.3 is gonna stay that format I think for a while... Why spend all kind of money to blow up a station 5 months down the line that is actually increasing listeners?

But here is my break down of the top 10

WQUE - CC ain't that crazy...A riot would erupt at the CC studios over a change

WYLD-FM - See WQUE basically...Just not as violent

WNOE - CC got one, two, and three ... Plus ratings above all except those aimed at african americans.... Nah... Plus all the cowboys (and cowgirls) would rope the execs at CC in what 12 seconds?!?:)

WWL-AM - You are not gonna put music on AM..espcially kill a news legend

KMEZ - Too many listeners and Citadel crown jewel in NOLA....Nope

WLMG - Actually this and the next one are on my list...They have fallen hard last book... But if kept alive... It could be the home for the real "jack"'s former listeners

WTKL - Oldies is still pretty high in NOLA... If TKL would go, people would flock to WLMG and TIX in a heart beat.... If entercon blows up this one, It would probably be their hope they would move to WLMG as TIX is too niche for most people.

WEZB - Overhauled slightly at the beginning of the year and starting to see returns on the programming if the target demo numbers posted a while back are to be expected....

WRNO - Starting to slump due to Bayou 105.3...Possible... If anything happens to the "end" like some doomsayers claim, this could become active rock in a heartbeat and take out what's left of the end...

WYLD-AM - It's AM and a lot of listeneres praying for it's salvation.... Nope status quo...

So One CC and 2 entercons .. my guess is the entercons have it with another station shifting it's format (like 94.3 playing more than the selected classic hits it's playing now) or one of the also rans picking up another stations slack..

What you think?

How did you come about this information?

The problem is that the "Jack" nickname is exclusive to Infinity Radio. If anyone tries a "Jack" format, it won't be named "Jack".

Actually, any company can use the "Jack" name, as long as they pay the original "Jack" first and agree to some rules (i.e. no jocks at startup).

Infinity has chosen to do this; however, the other companies choose to go around that and use names like "My", "Fickle", or even "Frank". That way, they save money.

If I'm not mistaken, I don't think it is. I think's Infinity is just the only one willing to pay the licensing fee. Other companies *COUGH*Clear Channel*COUGH* would rather come up with something like My99.5 and a position of 'We Play Anything' than to pay someone. I understand being frugal, but this seems a bit riduculous.

Actually, the whole city.

Buddy D (God rest his soul) would come back and haunt New Orleans forever.

The only AC in town? Nah.

Oldies was doing well in Indianapolis and it was killed off for Jack. This may be the best bet.

I was in Chicago for the flip to "Jack" this past week. The music was great...80s, hot AC, classic rock, even some new rock mixed in. My favorite thing was a liner that said something to the effect of: Bob, Frank, Jack, Dick, oh wait! our lawyers don't like Dick!...gave me a good laugh. Overall, I believe the format would work...sounds alot like [email protected] but no 60s and almost no 70s either.

WTKL in Baton Rouge is marginal at best in a car. Definitely not listenable in offices, homes, etc. Baton Rouge and Lafayette (40 miles apart) share most 100kwatt stations nicely, but Baton Rouge and New Orleans (70 miles) are simply too far apart. WYNK has one of the best BR signals and is listenable in Metairie but not at all in New Orleans itself.

Driving up to Pearl, MS recently, I heard the Jack station out of Jackson (no pun intended there). I thought it was a fine mix of music. Also showed me how much Red in BR isn't really a Jack-like format.

If that's true then there's only two real candidates: 92.3 and 104.1.

Yeah, 104.1 flopped as the Fox, but that was classic hits with a rock focus. Jack's sound is different, and isn't as focused.

But Clear Channel isn't going to pay to use the rights of the Jack name. They do have a couple of variety stations in the Midwest under different names.

92.3 just flipped to Diva, so unless the revenue isn't up to par, I don't see that one changing.
______________
