Jack Smiths Falls / Ottawa

One of the smallest Jacks out there, 92.3 Smiths Falls Ontario, has gone to a 60s and 70s oldies based format, still as Jack-fm. They now play 2-3 80s songs an hour and nothing newer.

I'm willing to speculate the same thing will happen in Toronto Canada, where ratings appear to be below what they should be.

It would be harder for Toronto to do that, as they have to follow the non-hit rule that keeps olides off FM - not to mention their 40% Cancon. Jack Smiths-Falls only has to play 15% non-hit.

Very interesting... Tonight I discovered (in doing research about this situation, thanks to your tip) that CJET-FM is prohibited from soliciting advertising from the Ottawa market, though it does rimshot it a bit. Do you, Ian, or anyone else for that matter, know if 93.9 Bob FM (CKKL) in Ottawa has coverage into the Smiths Falls area? That's the only logical reason I can see for CJET-FM making the move...

Another question: should it be de-listed in the Variety Hits directory? It doesn't meet the criteria per se, but it's an unusual situation since it is a licensed JACK-FM station, and it transitioned to this different timeframe. Thoughts?

Not that this matters much, but how much can con does the Smith falls Jack have to play? I thought Toronto's Jack = 40 percent, but Smith falls Jack = only 35 percent can con.<P ID="signature">______________

Yes, BOB and all the other Ottawa FMs make it into Smiths Falls. My reasoning for the change, though, is that JACK may have been stepping over co-owned KISS-FM in the west-end suburbs a bit. JACK doesn't participate in Ottawa ratings, but they can still have a negative effect on other stations.

I'd be tempted to keep it - it's still imaged the same - the music just got a bit older. Tough call, though.

Re: Sample Hour

Their biggest mistake may end up being the fact that they're still called Jack.
With that much change, and the same name, people who like that kind of music, but didn't like the kind of music Jack played before may fail to notice the new Jack...

PLUS, they own Oldies 1310, will it take too much attention away from that station?

I don't think they care.

Re: Sample Hour

The biggest laugh is that this is considered a format. This is something anyone can do. It's anyone's game now. Time to start paying PD's 7.50 per hour.

My best guess: Multi pd? More than one station perhaps?
