Jack vs Klos

I know im not in the radio business , but IT IS simple common sense that if arrow can go from a classic rock to "JACK" and end up beating "KLOS" who is now the only Classic Rock station do you think heads should roll over at KLOS
I mean "JACK" just basically gave the "classic rock throne" to KLOS and if KLOS can not capitalize on the move , I would think people are in trouble over at KLOS.....
If i were RITA WILDE i would concentrate on the "new classic rock"...
early motley crue early ACDC early black sabbath early 80's stuff before the "poison "hair bands came into full effect...

KLOS' best move is to just keep doing what they are doing. Even if Jack is a long-term success (which I think it will be,) they will probably not enjoy the massive ratings of an initial spike forever. Once things settle down, KLOS will probably still be there chugging along. They've ridden out slight dips in the ratings before, but they always resurface.

As for your metal suggestions, I think they're already doing that. I hear tons of Ozzy, Sabbath, AC/DC, and especially Led Zep, a group for which Jack only plays 3 songs.

Knowing Rita personally, I wouldn't dare to tell her what she should be doing. KLOS is very well focused under her.

KLOS has changed since Jack hit the air. And for the better. It is more focused playing the top classic rock tracks and hits now, for once. For too long KLOS has missed the opportunity to capitalize on the demise of former competitors (K-West, KMET, Pirate Radio, KLSX and Y107). This time, they've mostly done it right becoming a near Arrow clone musically and bringing back Arrow (and KLOS) alumnus Joe Benson. Jim Ladd's show is the only one which does not adhere to the more hit oriented classic rock sound which I think is a mistake.

But what is KLOS's future (other than a rumored station sale again reported in todays InsideRadio.com morning report)? With no real direct competition, a shrinking and aging audience and a morning show that is probably going to retire in the near future, its future is just a few years behind that of K-Earth. Death. But for now, they're in good shape as one of the few places in this market that own the male demo.

I think there is a message for KLOS in the Arrow to Jack switch....

Classic Rock is DEAD. It is time to come up with a new vision of that format. Arrow left the format for a reason...and it wasn't because KLOS was such a strong competitor. KLOS's audience continues to get older and older. And as time goes on management at KLOS is less and less likely to want rock the boat.

What is "new" classic rock?
Sounds like an oxymoron to me!
(kinda like "modern oldies..." They're either modern, or old, but they can't be both).

Agreed that it was a good idea to bring back Uncle Joe. They should have him host the 7th Day again - that was the best place for him.

I don't think they've really changed the playlist too much, though. KLOS has always had a good balance of well-known classic rock songs and deeper tracks. That's what has kept them around so long. They were always a more well-rounded station than their competitors, (not including KMET in its glory days or KLSX in its early days.) Sticking to the hits is what made Arrow boring, lifeless, and ulimately...gone.

Good example is being shown right now with their A to Z marathon. I'm hearing obscure Bob Dylan tracks next to forgotten minor Quiet Riot followed by famous Who anthems and then Babe by Styx and then Nirvana. That's pretty diverse.

Another poster mentioned Rita Wilde - I'd say she is superb - great DJ and great programmer over the years. Plus she has a cool rare U2 collection.

Ulitmately, classic rock might face the same problem any style of music faces when its fans age and start (gasp!) dying off. I don't know, though. Maybe this music will live on. I see 14 year olds walking around with Zeppelin and Deadhead shirts on. The Beatles are still able to sell huge humbers with a greatest hits album. This was really good music that may remain popular indefinitely. That's why it was brought back in the mid-80's in the first place.

They do need to reconsider their new slick voice-over guy and somewhat crass money bank game. It doesn't fit in with the heritage image of the station.

I don't have a problem with their image voice over talent, I love a good smooth voice, but I think the money bank game sounded bigger before the payoff. 5 grand and some change sounded really small in their promo. My 13 year old son listens to AC/DC, Led Zep, Hendrix and the Stones to name a few. There are kids everywhere that are turning on to this music, so a new audience could be emerging.
While it was smart to add many of the staples of ARROW 93, it was almost too much for the 1st month or so. I also could not disagree more with an earlier post's comments regarding Jim Ladd. It's a great feature that adds to the station's and ultimately the formats heritage. It's a direct thread to the format's beginnings that only enhances KLOS!
