Jack: Who? When?

I've tried to keep up to date with the format du jour that is JACK. We all understand that it is a temporary fix at best...but will Jack move to Vegas?

Star? Seems like the best candidate. The 80's format is dead. They seem resistant to take on Mix and become a Hot AC. They already play a lot of Jack-like tracks.

The Point? Wouldn't take much to make them Jack-like. But, they already match up to well with the rest of Lotus' properties.

KKLZ? The station has been on death watch for years. Yet they never seem to change. Then again Jack would kill sister station Star.

KOOL? It certainly would help demo wise for CC...then KKLZ could become an Oldies station.

KLUC? Jack would hurt sister Mix. In addition, KLUC still bills well.

When? I've given up trying to climb into the minds of Vegas GM's...Half the time I can't understand why they're doing what they do, let alone when they are going to do it.

To use a poker analogy, the stations in Las Vegas play the hand they were dealt. It seems we have less format changes than just about anywhere else. In fact, the only frequency that has changed in the 21st century is 101.9 (from country to CHR/Pop to CHR/Rhythmic to Regional Mexican Oldies). No other station has changed. Although V108 did shift from Urban to Urban AC in early 03.

I would agree with you that the best candidate to go Jack is Star. Yes, Jack is a temporary fix format. But so was 80s. That's why there are hardly any 80s stations left, it was good for a few books or in Star's case a few years. It's not a format you can stick with forever. There is so much buzz on Jack right now that I'm surprised Beasley doesn't go for it. They could even keep the same staff and do a version of variety hits that has jocks like KKLT/Phoenix (The Peak). Ever since KKLT switched to the Peak they have had excellent ratings, especially in the money demos.

One station you didn't mention as a Jack candidate is KXTE. What are they going to do when Stern is gone? Can they make money with such a young male audience? They are not in the top 10 25-54 outside of mornings. Infinty loves the Jack format. They have switched more stations to Jack than anybody. The only problem is that KMXB would be one of the stations Jack would hurt. But this didn't stop Infinity in Baltimore, they switched an oldies station to Jack even if that cluster has a Hot AC "Mix" station WWMX.

That's up in the air. I have not heard anything about Jack (or Jill for that matter) debuting in Vegas.

Good possibility. Playing 80s songs is great, but after a few years it tends to get old, so Star is a legitimate contender.

The Point is good where they are right now. Should leave that station alone.

KKLZ has been on "death watch" since Johnson & Tofte were sacked in 2000 in favor of "Mike & Brian", which bombed twice in Vegas.

That could go either way.

Jack FM is somewhat similar to what KLUC was like some 25, 30 years ago.

Stay tuned... perhaps come July 1st.

jack would do better in place of star...not many 80's stations around these days...kool should stay as is, but the point should change formats....kklz is still a good station...

I would disagree about the Point changing formats, they are #5 25-54.
