The thing I don't like about some formats, like jack, is that they try to cover too much territory, and end up pleasing no one but forks who have no opinions.
WJNA tonight is an example. I'm listening to Paul Dunn's little-publicized all night "East of Midnight" show, which has some 50s/60s lounge-type jazz (I'm sure that's not the correct term, but...) some beautiful music, and some oldies.
I'm enjoying the ambience as I'm writing. He plays Lets Take A Walk Around The Block, which I like but haven't heard in years. Then Spooky. Then Blue Champagne.
Now I don't dislike Spooky, but it ruined the mood.
Then, after Blue Champagne, he played something that may have been the Eagles, and I said the **** with it and decided to listen to a Sinatra CD I haven't heard yet.
(Would you believe, last month I got 31 CDs for $5 at an estate sale... mostly big band, jazz, Irish, and country! Nothing I dislike, but some that doesn't excite me.)
Of course, I've long said WJNA has a schizo format.... trying to please big band, oldies, pop, and easy listening fans at the same time. The only consistent show on JNA is the 7-to-mid oldies show. The other 19 hours they wander all over the place.
More about WJNA (Mickey Miller, Music of Your Life, etc.) is in August Radio News, but you knew that!
