I've been in the Memphis TN market for over 20 years. On a recent visit to Nashville, I lisened to the Jack format on 96.3 I think. I'm a 54 year old male (the demo that nobody tarkets except newstalk and sports) and I really liked it. I liked the variety of music and liked the imaging as well. I was listening Memorial Day weekend....is at always automated? I wonder why someone in Memphis hasn't picked this up yet?

The Jack format uses an air staff in Canada but so far in the U.S. they are all automated. Some Jack-a-like stations like the Arch in St. Louis do use an air staff.

I'm also surprised Memphis hasn't gotten it; many smaller markets than Memphis are doing well with it. Jackson, MS actually had it long before Nashville did!

littlebigradio - you can listen to Nashville's jack @ www.963jackfm.com. It is one of the top performing and best sounding jacks. It's cool that radio programmers are finally seeing that 50+ old listeners are not only into Air Supply and want to still rock with the best of them. Even without any local air staff it's #2 in the market, just barely behind Mix 92.9. Amazingly enough, there are hot and cold opinions about it andnot a lot of "oh, it's just okay, whatever." It's weird to go into businesses and see such a diverse group of places playing Jack. It seems to stretchthe demographic's in almost every direction. I have heard from a lot of people who listen to AAA WRLT are on the Jack bandwagon to, which is sort ofa surprise. It's been a while since I have been in Memphis to listen to the stations there, but I can't remember any standouts. Do you have afavorite there? Maybe someone will see this post and get you your very own Jack in Memphis.

I go to Memphis about once every month of two on business and the only station I even bother to tune in when I'm down there is 98.1 The Max. It's the only Memphis that stands out , IMO, since 107.5 The Pig left the air.

Wouldn't a Memphis Jack have to be an ABC Jack? Memphis is market #49...

That may be the problem. Memphis has a few stations owned by CBS if I'm not mistaken; Cbs has put it on in several of the markets they are in. Unless therre would be an exception allowed for Memphis; I don't think CBS owned stations would want to put on an ABC-Jack.BTW Denver has a morning, afternoon and evening air personality. Kansas City, Sandiego and probably have traffic reports and some news in the morning and afternoon. Not every jack in Canida have air staffs.Wouldn't a Memphis Jack have to be an ABC Jack? Memphis is market #49...

I am in the same demo as you, Little...But I have to say that I LOVED Nashville's "Jack" when it first flipped, but now I am getting tired of it. I understand that is a common problem with the Jack format. It's hard to keep the music fresh.

I understand that is a I listen to the jacks that have online streams and make comparrisons. Right now my jack of the day would be the one in Dallas. I remember a liner on our jack that said something like if you hear country, jazz and rock on the same station station; That's us. The jack in Dallas seems to be adhearing to that concept. Yesterday I heard the Hooters followed by the orriginal sun records version of Folsom Prison Blues by Johnny cash. They also have fresh new jingles. Our jack has good ratings since they came on the air On May 12th of last year. In radio terms this is good. Is the thinking that they should program it consertatively to keep those ratings? .common problem with the Jack format. It's hard to keep the music fresh.

I'm not a programmer, but I would think you could keep the music fresh simply because of the huge library of songs that are available. I know that Oldies formats get a little stale after a year or so, but with Jack you can pick and choose from 4 or 5 different formats. Maybe I just need to listen to the format more. Since there are no Jack formats around the Memphis area, I need to check em out online.
