I had seen somewhere (perhaps TVshowsondvd.com) that the color episodes of The Honeymooners may be released on DVD next year. Not sure if it will be just The Honeymooners or entire episodes of the variety show.

Could it be...that the show is not "on-the-air" to drum up business for selling
DVDs of the programs?

Naw...couldn't be...???
______________

Possibly the master tapes no longer exist? (Although they must have been located for the color Honeymooners ... which are on American Life TV, to provide the correct network name.)

I have noticed that the bulk of what is being released on DVD is either recent (past 20 years) vintage, or shows that were originally on film. That might be part of the equation as well.

All just musings, mind you.
______________

They should still exist -- it was in syndication through the mid-1980s, at least. I recall my local PBS station (WEDU ch.3 in Tampa Bay) running repeats of this show around this time.

I thought Jackie Gleason had held on to everything he did on television from 1952-onwards.

He had reportdely forgotten that he had kept his old stuff; I have heard that the "Lost 'Honeymooners' Episodes" were released in the mid-1980's after Gleason got a bill from a storage facility near Miami for the continued storage of films and videotapes he didn't realize he still had. These included the "Honeymooners" segments from his 1950's CBS variety show.

Once he realized he had these episodes, he made arrangement to release them.

Weren't the color Honeymooners shows part of Gleason's vairety show from the 60's? If that's the case, then the other parts of the shows probably exist as well. Whether anything will be done with them (Most likely on DVD) will be the next question.

Those '60s Gleason variety shows were first syndicated in
1979. Episodes were cut down from 60 to 30 minutes, as
Carol Burnett's show was. I think it played mostly on
PBS stations; I know KCET/28 Los Angeles did so well into
the '80s. The hour-long Honeymooners, especially the "trip
to Europe" episodes, have also played in syndication. I
don't know if there's enough interest in any of Gleason's
television work beyond the 1950s Honeymooners to get stations
interested in buying the syndication package again. So your
best bet is probably going to be DVD, and somebody ought to
get cracking on that.
