Jack's Rival-The Edge 102

KSTJ has been working feverishly to create a new base for its declining format. "Mike O" and the General Manager were both together at the Margaritaville Restaurant the other day with a well known Programmer/Consultant of "Zapoleon Media Strategies". They were discussing how they would take on a new radio station if "Jack" was to evolve in the Las Vegas area. KSTJ management and "Zapoleon Media Strategies" found that a mostly 90's format with little 80's and some of today's hits would score a larger TSL with gen-xer's and post baby-boomers since the Jack format will be strong in way out 80's. Sounds like a Mix station doesn't it? Since Mix is mostly a Top 40 Hot-Modern A/C, Star, soon to be "The NEW Edge 102" will play the Maroon 5's and New Rob Thomas but lean towards a 90's image with songs like;
What I Got | Sublime, What's The Frequency, Kenneth? | REM, All Mixed Up | 311, How's It Gonna Be | Third Eye Blind, Zombie | Cranberries, Inside Out | Eve 6, Take A Picture | Filter, Shine | Collective Soul, Closing Time | Semisonic, Good | Better Than Ezra, Far Behind | Candlebox, You Get What You Give | New Radicals, What It's Like | Everlast, Cumbersome | Seven Mary Three, One Week | Barenaked Ladies, Feed The Tree | Belly, All I Want | Toad The Wet Sprocket, Runaway Train | Soul Asylum, Smells Like Teen Spirit | Nirvana, What Would You Say | Dave Mathewes, Little Miss Cant Be Wrong | Spin Doctors. What I understand is they plan to make the change sooner than July 4th...try July 2nd. The whole weekend to stunt and tweak the sound of "The New EDGE 102!" What about the talent? They never really had any! Get your resume and CD's out now cause change is about to happen again in Vegas. Oh and by the way, Guy Zapoleon of "Zapoleon Media Strategies" is the new consultant of Star since his protege' programmer Chareece Fruge exit Mix to take post in Denver at Alice.

Let's face it! The only way 102.7 will turn its act around will be by letting the current PD go. You have 2 different options:

A) Bring in Rick Kelly as the new PD.
B) Bring back their old Production Director Jamie Osborn to Program the Edge
format. He was the morning guy on the original Edge here in Vegas.

The post up on top has one thing right that I know of. That is, there is no talent on that station. Nobody is compelling. Those of you who say play the songs and shut up. Make up your minds and decide! Do you want DJ's or don't you. A DJ's job is to talk who cares what they talk about just as long as their numbers show that they are in the top for their day part.

So we will see what happens with Jack and it will be in the top til about December. Then watch it spiral..... Because if I said it once, I've said it a 1,000 times, nobody in this market wants to work for their money. People would rather do and oldies format no matter the music then meet with record reps and make this market sound like LA where it should be at this point in time.

Like it or not we are a suburb of LA we are 280mi away from the city of Angels and have their citizens here every weekend and holiday. Where is our KROQ and KIIS? The only reason Kiss out here failed is because they were all over the place music wise and every day part but nights was horrible. Follow the play list from these two stations and you'll have a succesful one out here. Don't deviate or think you know what to do just follow their success.

EDGE 102.7?? That would require Beasley to do something right now wouldn't it??

Lets look at their success.. Ken Carson, Big Kahuna, Mike O'brien??

PLEASE.. Why you want to hire Rick Allen or Jamie Osborne? If they were any good, they'd still be around wouldn't they? Where are they now? Rick is out of a job and Osborne? Where is he?

Mix and Extreme have the alternative format locked up nicely.

So maybe you should try your post again there HEYYOU only this time try using your brain.

They don't do anything right I'll agree with you there.

> Lets look at their success.. Ken Carson, Big Kahuna, Mike

Harry the GM is just easily impressed. He is a hillbilly, from the backwoods he doesn't know better.

> Where are they now? Rick is out of a job and Osborne?
> Where is he?

Why must you not pay attention? I said Rick Kelly not Rick Allen. Jamie Osborne is a successful programmer in market 13 jack ass. You pay attention.

> Mix and Extreme have the alternative format locked up

The day Mix and Extreme start playing real alternative with the attitude and precision that KROQ plays alternative I will bow down to you. But I don't see that happening any time soon.

> So maybe you should try your post again there HEYYOU only

I don't need to. I had it right the first time.

Did I hit a sore spot there HEYYOU?? OK, Rick Allen, Rick Kelly, fake radio names anyway for talentless radio idiots. Market 13 where is that?? Oh, Puerto Rico.. Succesful? What station is Mr. Osborne programming? I only see spanish formats in the ratings. Some talent programming spanish in a spanish speaking market. OOOH..

Mix and Extreme do quite well in the ratings in case you haven't noticed! and trying to be KROQ in Lost Vegas would be pointless. So you think you had it right? What station do you work for or program you little genius? I bet you don't. You are just another probably unemployed radio wanna be.

Radiononfan you tell me who you are. Then I will tell you who I am. We'll meet somewhere and I'll slap you around a little. Teach you some respect. OK!

Typical... What are you about 16 years old? I rip your moronic posts apart and since you can't come up with a REAL answer, you have to resort to threats. I think I already know who you are, and I'm right, you are a unemployed radio wanna be.

So, either respond with some brain work, or just admit I"M RIGHT!!

I am actually 17. You don't know who I am.... You suck, don't talk to me at all. Let's agree to not disagree. Let's agree that you are wrong.

I REST MY CASE! Drop by the board again when your brain can transfer those amazing thoughts to your keyboard.

Radiononfan,

I really don't know what we are fighting about. You hate Beasley so do I. You are only mad because I dissed Mix and Extreme. There is nothing wrong with that. I hate those stations. There are absolutley no talents on at any point during the 24 hours 7 days a week 365 days a year they broadcast. You have your opinion I have mine. I know real talent! When a jock can hold somebody's attention without reading a liner card that is who you hold onto. Not somebody who sticks their nose up your rear and tells a higher up they are right all the time. That is why my voice is in almost every market, from Wyoming to New York.

Vegas is just packed full of jocks who grew along with the market. You are probably one of them. DJ's should always be trying to find a market higher from the market they are in. Once you get a job start sending out your stuff the very first day you are on board with a new station. Here in Vegas that doesn't happen. Jocks are happy to be in a rut. I don't understand why that is here? It is like they have all lost their drive to do something good with their career. Or maybe they listen around the dial and hear other jocks here and wonder if they are the same caliber as their counterparts and it scares them that maybe they suck and that is why they were hired, so that they would just blend in.

Blending in is what this whole market is about. There are about 5 different stations playing the same music in this town. All of their jocks talk about how to win a trip, some money, or come to (insert car dealership name here) to get some lousy tickets to some god awful show or movie. It's not individual anymore. Everything is the same. What happened to a jock being cocky? Entertaining? Talking up a song to the post and dropping 2 different sweepers so it mixed real tight and sounded major market? That is all I am saying!
Edited by HEYYOU on 06/30/05 10:16 PM.

Why in the world would Star want to go up against KXMB, KOMP and KXTE? Those three stations already have all of those 90's and the fringe 80's taken care of. Sounds like a tough fight right off the bat.

Why not go country or AC? Country makes the most sense since there is only one competitor. The AC format has two if you include Sunny And The Oasis.

I think that the above post is pure BS.

>What happened to a jock being cocky? Entertaining? Talking up a song to the >post and dropping 2 different sweepers so it mixed real tight and sounded >major market? That is all I am saying!

Like your attitude!! The only problem is that it takes talent to do this. Las Vegas Radio recycles the same old tired out, never were and never can be jocks.

> Zapoleon Media Strategies? I can't keep from laughing..take a look on their website at the some of the small market stations they consult..and take a look at Arbitron and see how those same stations perform..why in hell do they think they can succeed with major players?

One of their guys just got hired as the VP of programming for the red ink hemmoraging NextMedia..hilarious!
