Jack's subtle reposition & website

Anyone even noticed that Jack's rockin' more? Not alot
of Air Supply anymore! The Mix move away is in motion.
Lookout (in subtle ways) 100.1, 102.9 (not a lot to steal from)
and mostly(90%-95%) 105.9. Thoughts? Oldies 97.1
should be safe. I think this is the greatest radio
concept in years. You can just screw around with
everything and everyone (other stations, that is)
and listeners just want more.

The first thing I see on the website is "Jack knows AVRIL LAVIGNE" And they happen to be playing "Complicated" right now according to the "now playing" feature. I don't think they'll be taking much away from "The Rock" (just look how good this book has been for 105.9) Do you know many Skynyrd fans who dig Avril?

So what has been the change? A turn to more "rock-flavored" artists and less pop and disco? If that's the case, then this is just a re-hash of Jacor's old "Mix/Alice" format. Yes it will damage "Mix 92.9" although it may have already. This is what "Star 97" should have been sounding like.

By the way, I only heard Air Supply on Jack exactly ONCE and it was within their first few days, so it wasn't exactly a "core" artist.

Jack's subtle reposition

They probably got a music test back and adjusted their playlist accordingly.

About 60% of the songs/srtist/groups on The Rock are in rotation on Jack.
ZZ Top, Dep Leppard, Eric Clapton, Pat Benatar, U-2. What is
missing is some of the Southern Rock that The Rock plays.
It totally has to skew toward The Rock to take numbers. And
if you may recall, The Rock had one big spike in the Spring
Book which makes them look good. The same thing happened to
Mix in the Winter, so you are seeing what that can do to
the numbers during and after for Mix in the numbers. No
other station is being targeted as much as 105.9. But, I
have to admit the Jack TSL is lower for the rock lover. Still,
it is a second choice to The Rock so if it takes away a
point, you see what happens to the current Top Dog. As for
Air Supply, it was about once every five days, so with a
large playlist, it's almost impossible to hear it very
often. I think there are about 60 songs now off the playlist
that were removed to keep the distance with Mix. Still, I
agree it's a subtle threat to The Rock, but given time it
will be the biggest threat to The Rock since they flipped.

Well, CDB's "Devil Went Down to Georgia" is playing on Jack. So
much for the Southern Rock comment. Ha.

Since you made the original post a few days ago, I've been listening more to Jack (about 30-40 minutes a day) and honestly I don't see this so-called shift to a more rock-leaning format.

3 songs that specifically stood out to me heard on Jack this weekend were Rose Royce "Car Wash", Matthew Wilder "Break My Stride" and Kool & The Gang "Too Hot"

Nothing wrong with those songs, I like them a lot actually. But a typical WNRQ listener wouldn't stick long with a station playing songs like that.

I think it would be more accurate to think of Jack not as a rock station, but as a "Gold-based Hot AC"

Will it be a "subtle" threat to "The Rock"? Sure, there's that curiosity factor. But they'll be gone when Avril Lavigne comes on.

Totally agree with you. I didn't intend for my comments to
mean that Jack has gone to a rock station. It's still the
VH thing. Just that their has been a pull away from some
of the music that overlaps on Mix. Still playing Madonna,
Christopher Cross and Fleetwood Mac, too. My intent was
that the playlist had/has/is being tweaked with a few more
rock songs than originally planned per hour. You're double
right about the Rock listeners being gone when AL comes on.
Still, this station is sort of addictive in it's own
way.

Much agreed. Unless I'm in the mood for country, Jack is really the only station I can leave on for long periods of time.

> right now they have lot's of females listening... maybe a 50/50 split male to female. what will happen to their overall ratings if they swing as you say.. 90% towards the rock? is it about beating the rock or having great 25-54 numbers?
