Jackson area stations off of the air

Hey all -

Anyone have an update on the following...

WIIN 780 AM: FCC website says they've been silent (for a over a month) for financial reasons. They did not turn in their license.

WJFN 970 AM: They seem to have been off the air for about a week, despite the fact that they have a nice FM Translator on 99.1 with 250 Watts approved for their current tower site.

WPBQ 1240 AM: They have been off of the air for over six weeks.

WWCV-LP 100.5 FM: This station has been off of the air for about five or six weeks, which has significantly improved reception of WRTM 100.5 FM for me.

This is like Hurricane Katrina all over again! Am I missing any?

I thought 970 might've been off the air due to the storm from Tuesday morning. But then again, I didn't think this station would survive too much longer, especially now that there's an FM sports station in town now.

WJFN 970 was off and on intermitently friday afternoon. Its back on the air. It looks like they fixed the low audio problem. Its a lot louder now. BTW. what was wrong with 98.7 over the last week. It sounded like some CB operater was playing with the knobs. It was so loud it sounded like garbage. Distortion and crackling all over the place. It would blow you out of the car when the scan hit the station. Isn't there a law against overmodulating? The got rid of some of the distortion, but it still sounds too loud. It looks like they are trying to make it sound like Y 101. Which in my opinon also sounds blasty and loud.
I understand wanting to have an AM station a little loud so you can drown out the static. But on FM they don't need to blow everyone out. Very annoying.

The exciter on Mix went out and are currently on backup. It was WAY loud for 3 days. I'll pass along to engineering.

I noticed that too. 98.7 reminded me of 96.3 back when it was the Class-FM and engineered to be extremely loud, problem was that it was also distorted to the point where 96.3 was [nearly] unlistenable.

It seems the Radio People like their stations too loud. 96.3 as mentioned was so loud for a while I refused to listen, y-101 is too loud especially on songs that were loud in the first place. and now 98.7, which used to sound half way decent is still a little loud the last I checked. And for those 3 days it was so distorted it was unlistenable. I wonder if they got any hate mail or angry phone calls from the soccer moms.

What are WWCV LP and WRTM?
Times have changed when three AMs are off the air an nobody notices.
What are the calls of the station at 930Khz?

Economic tsunami, no EAS Header for that! For radio there will be little or no recovery, just adaptation.

How many years has WOKJ been off the air now?

WOKJ's big mistake was going for the 50,000/10,000 at 1550 rather than staying at 1590 5,000/1,000.
The power expense was through the roof on the used transmitter (water cooled, as I recall)...and
1550's patten covered little of Jackson day or night...but at night boomed into Columbus Ga and Tulsa.
Meanwhile, 1590 changed overnight to WWUN and played a good bit of black oriented Top 40...every
third song, as I recall.

WWCV is the low-powered oldies station on Canton on 100.5. WRTM is the urban AC from Vicksburg, also on 100.5. 930's calls are WSFZ.

Thanks, GB.
I am out of touch with the LPs.
And hadn't followed 930 recently.
