Jackson

Froggy 104 has done well, and a few others. The market has in interesting oldies station that produces quartely oldies shows. There are others outside the market, that I thought would have fared better. WEIO comes to mind.

Jackson has a glut of frequencies taken up by FM News/Talk stations. There is 101.5 and also the TJ network on 105.3, 94.3, and a translator on 94.1, which do nothing but simulcast WTJS 1390. I know they probably bring in enough ratings and bucks that Forever is satisfied, but this is still too much overkill for a city the size of Jackson, and it takes up frequencies that could be used for other formats that aren't currently in the area. There was also 97.7, but it was sold to James Wolfe and changed to Urban Gospel. Although I don't listen to them regularly, at least that's one less station being taken up by the FM N/T glut now.

Seems like there is more high school sports (especially Football) on those talk fm's. I'm not sure who owns what, but there's one station that does the "game of the week" and then will have scores from ALL OVER West TN, and then other stations that seem to focus on the games in other areas (although station is based in Jackson) I can't always catch them, but they seem to have plenty of sponsorship for all of it.
But, of course, they could do the games as they are now-regardless of format.

Didn't John Columbus (and Glassman's before him) own someting there?
At one time, Thunderbolt Broadcasting (parent company of WCMT in Martin) owned stations in the Milan/Trenton area. I believe this would include 97.7. From the history section of wcmt.com:
In 2000, Thunderbolt formed Gibson County Broadcasting and purchased WTKB FM in Milan and WTNE AM/FM in Trenton. Tinkle upgraded those stations to more power and the company sold those stations in January of 2005 to Grace Broadcasting.
As far as I know, Thunderbolt no longer has any holdings in Gibson County. They are only operating in Weakley and Obion Counties now.

High school football is religion in west Tennessee!

SL-100...
Does that stand for Salt Licker 100? I have a salt lick in my back yard for the deer and I swear I believe it's brand is SL-100.

There's nothing really to listen to in the Jackson area. To me it's a battle of rock, talk, and country stations. Nothing stands out IMO. I usually end up to listening to 90.1 or 91.5 or to some cds. You would think for a area this size there be more out there to listen to you know?

I always thought "SL-100" sounded like the name of a motorcycle.

"Hey, wanna go for a ride on my new SL-100?"
;D

Change that "Salt-Licker" number to a 500, and you've got the name of a NASCAR race, the "Salt-Licker 500"! 8)

Let me get this strait...

Just checking.

Well, J-Rod...I haven't dissed Jackson Radio. In fact, I worked in Jackson radio back in the day. I listen to ROCK 92.3 in my Jeep as much or more than I listen to any other station. Even though only Mornings and Afternoon Drive are live anymore, I like the music playlist. There's not anything in Memphis that sounds much better than anything in Jackson, in my opinion.

WKIR 104-FM (Rock 104) was at one time one of the best stations in Jackson! They rocked! That was back in the late '70s. But in early 1981, they "went country," and, despite some name and call letter changes in the meantime, have been country ever since.

You're right Meep, You didn't diss... but then again, you only had one post. It just seems to me that if we are just going to say "Jackson Radio sucks" we should also include what we think would be better.

It's really easy to take a jab, but if you back it up with some reasoning or advice people might actually listen.

I worked in Jackson too, and I personally think that Froggy has a decent playlist, but I can't get around the childishness of it. However, I also know that won't change anytime soon.

Rock 92.3 is the music station that I listen to most, Mostly just to hear Gregg's ever insightful comments.

Last time I listened to SL-100 was when I was working in Jackson, I liked it but can't pick it up where I live.

Not a fan of Kix... just not my kind of music. I would like Newstalk better if there were less "pukers" on the mic.

106.9 is good at times, and I always listen to Star107.7 during Christmas.

But to be honest, I normally listen to talk-radio out of Mississippi now.

J ROD why would you make this assumption ... Let me get this strait...

If you are referring to my first post .. I simply ask a question .. do you feel you need to justify yourself or what?

Something I just noticed recently for the first time is that WJAK 1460 has switched to Fox Sports. I'd guess this is a result of Mr. Wolfe buying 97.7, but how long has this been on?

With the flooding situation in Jackson this weekend I have to say although I'm not a big news/talk fan that both 101.7 and the TJ network did a great job in letting people know what roads are open. The only shortcoming was that 101.7 stopped updates and went back to regular programming at about 5:30 PM while the TJ network is still going as I'm writing after 10 PM. Although I've had my complaints about there being too many FM N/T frequencies in Jackson, this is something they definitely did right.
